Perth Glory v Western United: A-League preview

Perth Glory are in desperate need of points when they take on Western United in the A-League at HBF Park on Friday.

Starting the season with new owners, a new coach and a new-look squad, hopes were high among the long-suffering Glory faithful.

However, it has been a disastrous start as they have picked up just one point from their opening four games.

It is still early days, but Glory need to put on a performance in front of their own fans in order to give the whole club a lift.

Western United are just one point better off, but they have been more competitive in their opening four games and will feel they should have more points to show for their efforts.

Taggart brings hope for Glory

Glory have suffered three defeats from four games so far this season, but it is the manner of the defeats that is most concerning.

They have conceded a staggering 13 goals and have managed to score just one, to leave them second from bottom on the ladder.

Glory did show some grit when fighting out a goalless draw away at Central Coast Mariners, but all the hard work was undone when they returned to Perth.

Melbourne City ran riot at HBF Park with a 5-0 win, while Glory have also suffered a 6-1 loss to Macarthur FC.

Wellington Phoenix picked up a 2-0 win at HBF Park and the Glory fans already fear another wooden spoon could be heading their way.

But at least while they have Adam Taggart they do have some hope.

The Socceroos striker won the golden boot in the A-League last season and is the scorer of Glory’s only goal in this campaign.

Taggart knows where the back of the net is, but he needs the ammunition and that is something the rest of his team-mates have struggled to provide.

Western need to find shooting boots

Western United have a great recent record against Perth Glory, having won the last four meetings between the two sides.

Two of those victories have been in Perth, including a 4-3 success at HBF Park last season.

Western made a solid start to the season when drawing their opening two games, but have since lost the last two and need to bounce back.

Both games were tight, 1-0 against Melbourne City and 2-1 against Adelaide United, so Western have been pretty tight at the back.

They have conceded five goals in the four games, but have only managed to score three, which will be more of a concern for John Aloisi.

However, they now have a good chance to pick up a morale-boosting win over a Glory side that has been shipping goals for fun.
