Southampton v Tottenham: Premier League Monday preview

Tottenham Hotspur have been burned too many times this season to take anything for granted when they face rock-bottom Southampton on Monday morning.

Spurs have already handed Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town their first Premier League wins of the season, in addition to their recent bad luck on the south coast with a 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth in their last league game.

With just one win in 15 Premier League games this season, it’s been a tough start to the campaign for Saints but they will take hope from Spurs’ inconsistent form.

Martin desperate for valuable points

Seeing what the likes of Palace, Ipswich and Bournemouth have been able to do to Tottenham this season should give Saints boss Russell Martin encouragement ahead of Monday’s game with Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Five points from their first 15 games does not make great reading for Southampton fans and, with eight points between themselves and 17th-place, Saints need to start picking up wins to avoid being cut adrift.

Martin can also take encouragement from Southampton’s recent home record against Spurs, with both of the last two meetings at St Mary’s ending in draws.

Spurs have only managed to win one of their last four Premier League games against Southampton, with Saints at 2.05 to win or draw in this upcoming showdown.

Postecoglou seeking answers

Having had a confrontation with Spurs fans after the away defeat at Bournemouth, Postecoglou appears to be feeling the pressure at Tottenham.

Calling out Timo Werner for his poor first-half performance against Rangers in the UEFA Europa League as “unacceptable” will be praised in some quarters, while others will question if the manager should be digging out senior players to the media.

Clearly the Australian tactician is trying all he can to give Spurs that spark and motivation to find some winning form after this inconsistent start to the season.

Monday provides a good opportunity to get back to winning ways after a 1-1 draw at Ibrox in the Europa League.
