Tottenham v Elfsborg: UEFA Europa League Friday preview

Tottenham have the chance to secure a spot in the top eight when they host Elfsborg in the UEFA Europa League early on Friday morning.

It has been a tough time for Ange Postecoglou and his players in the English Premier League this season, but they have done better in European competition.

They have already qualified for the knockout phase play-offs, but an automatic place in the round of 16 can be secured with a win against Elfsborg.

The Swedish side will be no pushovers, however, as they have the chance to reach the knockout stage of a European competition for the first time in their history.

With that in mind, they will turn up in north London determined to pick up all three points and should be tough opponents.

Spurs need a win to boost morale, so there is more than a place in the top eight up for grabs for Postecoglou and his team.

Spurs boosted by Hoffenheim win

Tottenham showed what they are made of as they picked up a crucial 3-2 win away at Hoffenheim on Matchday seven.

James Maddison grabbed the opening goal, before skipper Son Heung-min helped himself to a brace.

Both players will be looking to get on the scoresheet again, but the Lilywhites are not short of players who can find the back of the net, despite a number of injury absentees.

Spurs have not had an issue hitting the back of the net in this competition, firing home 14 in the seven games played.

However, they have conceded nine and will need to tighten up at the back if they are to go on and win the competition.

The home clash against the Swedish team, who have managed to score just nine goals in seven, would be a good place to start.

Spurs continue to have injury issues, but Postecoglou will be confident he has the players to get the job done on home soil.

Dominic Solanke (knee), Brennan Johnson (calf), Timo Werner (hamstring), Destiny Udogie (hamstring), Guglielmo Vicario (ankle) and Wilson Odobert (hamstring) are all set to miss out, while Richarlison is a major doubt due to a groin problem.

Cristian Romero might return to action after a thigh injury to bolster the defence, while Brandon Austin is set to start in goal as recent signing Antonin Kinsky is not registered for this competition.

Elfsborg on a roll

Elfsborg will arrive in north London with confidence at an all-time high after winning their last two UEFA Europa League games.

They picked up a fine 1-0 away victory at Nice in Matchday seven, having defeated Qarabag FK by the same scoreline the week before.

That shows that they are capable of keeping a clean sheet and the chances are they will sit deep again and attempt to hit Spurs on the break.

As well as being full of confidence, Elfsborg are also highly motivated to make history and that will make them a very tricky opponent at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
