Tottenham v Liverpool: Premier League Monday preview

Tottenham play host to Liverpool in the early hours of Monday morning and the attacking approaches of both sides means a thriller should be on the cards at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs have scored 36 goals in 16 Premier League games played so far this season, but still lie down in mid-table due to the defensive deficiencies of Ange Postecoglou’s side.

The Reds, meanwhile, topped the table heading into the weekend round of matches, having lost just once in 15 matches in the English top-flight, while they have also won six out of six in the UEFA Champions League.

Spurs come in on a high

Postecoglou is firm in his belief in attacking football and that was evident in midweek as the Lilywhites reached the semi-finals of the League Cup by winning a thriller 4-3 against Manchester United.

In the last four the Lilywhites will face the Merseysiders, so both sides will be eager to land a psychological blow before that double-header in the new year.

Spurs’ recent form, like their season as a whole, is a mixed bag, with the Londoners having gone three league games without a win after a crushing 4-0 victory at ailing champions Manchester City.

That run ended with an overwhelming 5-0 victory at lowly Southampton, before the cup win at home to the Red Devils lifted the mood further.

Postecoglou has seen his side keep just one clean sheet in their last seven in all competitions and that has to be a concern as Liverpool are armed with a potent array of attacking options.

Both teams to score on Monday is 1.33 and that is made more likely with the hosts being shorn of the services of injured defenders Ben Davies, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, as well as first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Both sides have found the net in their last eight meetings, while Spurs have won just one of their last six visits from the Merseysiders.

Slot has Reds purring on all fronts

Many might have worried when Jurgen Klopp left Anfield at the end of last season, but his replacement, Arne Slot, has fitted in seamlessly and has the Reds challenging on all fronts.

Of the 24 matches they have played in all competitions they have won 20, drawn three and lost just one - a 1-0 home Premier League defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest.

That defeat to Forest was also the only game so far this season in which the Reds failed to score, while they come into this game having drawn their last two league games - 3-3 at Newcastle United and 2-2 at home to Fulham.

Ibrahima Konate and Conor Bradley are the only two injury absentees among Slot’s squad, while wing-back Andrew Robertson is back in the fold after serving a one-match suspension.

Slot certainly has the players to fight fire with fire at Tottenham, with the hosts highly unlikely to sit back and let the Reds enjoy an easy ride.

Mohamed Salah has been the standout star, netting 13 goals in 15 league appearances so far this season, with the Egyptian having scored in seven consecutive before drawing a blank against the Cottagers.

Salah - 1.95 to score at anytime on Monday - has also scored in three of his last four games against Tottenham and has an overall record of 12 goals in 20 outings against the Lilywhites in all competitions.
