With a major trophy and qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League, there’s plenty riding on Thursday's showdown between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final.
Both teams have had frankly appalling Premier League seasons by their standards, with Spurs down in 17th place on the ladder, while United are just one point and one place above them.
However, despite their troubles in the English top flight, a major piece of silverware and UEFA Champions League qualification is up for grabs in the UEFA Europa League final at San Mames Stadium in Bilbao.
There has been plenty of speculation regarding Ange Postecoglou’s future at Tottenham Hotspur ahead of next season but the Australian has an opportunity to end Spurs’ long wait for silverware this week.
Spurs have not won a trophy since lifting the EFL Cup back in 2008 but Thursday could be the day the wait for Tottenham fans finally comes to an end.
Postecoglou’s side have already met the Red Devils three times this season and have won every game.
A 3-0 win at Old Trafford in the Premier League near the start of the campaign was followed by a 4-3 win over United in north London in the EFL Cup in December.
A 1-0 victory in their last Premier League meeting at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in February saw Spurs earn a third consecutive win over the Red Devils.
Despite their recent record, Spurs are the 2.87 underdogs to win in the 90 minutes on Thursday, while they are 2.00 to lift the trophy.
A club with such a rich history of winning silverware, United will be hoping that previous experience can help them get over the line in the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao.
The Red Devils will be fully aware of their recent record against Spurs and manager Ruben Amorim and his staff will be working on a game plan to try and get one over on the Lilywhites on Thursday.
Failing to score in three of their last four Premier League games against Tottenham, trying to find a way past this Spurs’ defence will be the key for Amorim’s men in Bilbao.
United are the slight favourites at 2.45 to win in the 90 minutes at San Mames, while the Red Devils are 1.80 to lift the trophy.
