Wellington Phoenix v Brisbane Roar: A-League Thursday preview

Wellington Phoenix are in desperate need of a win against Brisbane Roar on Thursday in order to keep their hopes of reaching this year's final alive.

It has been a disappointing campaign for the Nix, who sit in 10th spot on the ladder, six points behind Macarthur FC in sixth.

They do have a couple of games in hand, but it is points in the bag that count, and the Phoenix are struggling after winning just one in the last five games.

Brisbane are also desperate for the win as they attempt to drag themselves off the bottom of the ladder.

Unless there is a big turnaround, the wooden spoon will be heading to the Roar.

Nix need to find shooting boots

Wellington Phoenix are unbeaten in the last three games, but two of them have been draws, and it is wins they need at this stage of the season.

They have managed to pick up just two wins in the last nine games, and unless they can find some form, they will miss out on the top six.

Scoring goals has been an issues for them, firing home just 15 all season, which is the second lowest total in the A-League.

At least they have Kostas Barbarouses, who has scored almost half of their goals this season, with seven in 14 games.

Defensively, they are solid, conceding just 17, one of the better records in the A-League, but they need to find their shooting boots.

The two draws in recent weeks were both 0-0 against Sydney FC and Central Coast and both were on home soil.

A 2-1 away win at Macarthur was sandwiched in between, but nothing other than three points against Brisbane will do.

They do have a good record against them and are unbeaten in the last six games.

Roar revert to type

Roar showed a glimpse of what they can do with a dramatic 4-3 win away at Sydney FC.

Unfortunately for everyone connected to the club it was short lived as they then slipped to a 1-0 home defeat against Western Sydney Wanderers.

It was their 11th defeat of the season and they are staring another wooden spoon in the face.

They should however sense an opportunity to beat a Wellington side that is lacking confidence on home soil.

Brisbane have lost the last two visits to Wellington, and their best result in recent seasons, was a 2-2 draw in 2023.

A share of the points could be on the card again it what will probably be a low-scoring affair.
