Wellington Phoenix v Sydney FC: A-League Wednesday preview

Sydney FC will look to continue their free-scoring form on Wednesday evening when they take on Wellington Phoenix at Sky Stadium.

Scoring 18 goals across their last six games in the A-League, Sydney have started to find their rhythm and have pushed themselves up to sixth place in the standings after a somewhat sluggish start to the season.

While manager Ufuk Talay and the Sky Blues are on a roll, Wellington are struggling at the wrong end of the table and face a big challenge on Wednesday to try and turn things around.

Phoenix down in the dumps

With five defeats in their last six games, it’s been a tough spell for manager Giancarlo Italiano and his Wellington side over the last month.

Beating Newcastle Jets in their final game of 2024, the Phoenix were hoping to have turned a corner after three-straight defeats, however, Wellington have started 2025 with back-to-back defeats to Melbourne City and Adelaide United.

A lack of goals has been the main issue for Italiano, with only Brisbane Roar, Central Coast Mariners and Perth Glory scoring fewer goals than Wellington this season.

The Phoenix have been reasonably solid in defence compared to other teams in the bottom half of the standings but that will be put to the test against Sydney this week.

Sky Blues flying up the ladder

Unbeaten in their last five A-League games, it’s been a contrasting month for Sydney, as they have climbed their way up to sixth spot on the ladder.

With a 3-0 win over Perth followed by a 4-1 victory over Central Coast, the Sky Blues have been showing a cutting edge in the final third.

English forward Joe Lolley has certainly been impressing this season, scoring eight goals in his 10 league appearances of the campaign so far.

Lolley scored a hat-trick against Perth, before Adrian Segecic also found the back of the net three times against the Mariners last time out.

Lolley is 2.87 in the anytime goalscorer market to find the back of net against Wellington, while Segecic is 4.50 to add to his goal tally against the Phoenix.
