Western United FC v Central Coast Mariners: A-League Wednesday preview

Western United have a great chance to consolidate their place in the top six when they entertain Central Coast Mariners on Wednesday night.

Western sit in fifth spot on the A-League ladder after winning four of the past five games and will be full of confidence heading into this clash with the Mariners.

Three points will take them up to third spot on the ladder and within touching distance of Auckland FC and Adelaide United.

Reigning premiers Central Coast continue to have a very inconsistent season and have work to do just to make the top six.

Missing out on finals is unthinkable after dominating for the last two seasons, but it will happen unless they can get improve as soon as possible.

Western find their shooting boots

Western have hit a rich vein of form in front of goal, scoring seven goals in picking up wins in their last two games - they edged out Melbourne Victory 4-3, before seeing off Newcastle Jets 3-1 last time out.

Noah Botic scored three of the goals, while leading goalscorer Hiroshi Ibusuki chipped in with two and now has seven for the season, as he turns out to be a very shrewd signing for John Aloisi’s side.

Despite scoring so many goals, defence continues to be an issue as they have conceded 20 goals in the season so far.

Victory and Sydney FC both scored three against them, while even Perth Glory hit the back of the net twice.

There is usually plenty of goals scored when these two sides meet. Indeed, four of the last six games have seen at least three goals scored.

Mariners bid to stay unbeaten

There have been signs of improvement for the Mariners, who are unbeaten in the last two games and who will look to make it three on Wednesday night.

They can take plenty of heart from a goalless draw at Wellington Phoenix at the weekend, while they also won 3-1 at Western Sydney Wanderers in the game before.

The Mariners also have a great record against Western, winning five of their last six meetings.

However, that was at the height of their powers and they head into this latest clash as the underdogs.

Scoring goals continues to be a problem and they have just 15 to their name, while they have also leaked 22.

That needs to change if they are to have any chance of climbing the ladder and making the top six.

The goals have dried up for Ryan Edmondson this season and it is Alou Kuol who is the club's leading goalscorer with just three goals.
