Australian Racing: Spangler ready to shine at Newcastle

There are four meetings set to take place on Friday with the main focus on Newcastle, where they are set to stage three Group 3 contests.

Race 5 Newcastle

Spangler @ 9.00

Race 6 Newcastle

Wollombi @ 4.20

Race 7 Newcastle

Alegron @ 21.00

Spangler set for Group 3 glory

The first of those Group 3 races comes up as the fifth race on the card, with the race in question the 1500m Australian Bloodstock Cameron Handicap.

Top weight Skyman is expected to have his supporters having delivered a big effort when jumping at triple figure odds in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes over 1400m at Randwick.

The eight-year-old suffered a length defeat when runner-up in that set weights contest when racing first up and he represents a powerful stable in that of Chris Waller.

The gelding delivered his most recent victory in a Listed event over 1615m at Doomben back in April and, having won on a good 4 track that day, the going here is no issue.

Barrier 11 isn’t ideal for Brett Prebble’s mount, however, and SPANGLER is the pick for the Kris Lees stable here.

The gelding has been racing at a lower level in 2023 including when delivering an impressive near five-length success in the 1400m Polytrack-Midway Championships Final at Randwick.

That triumph back in April came on a heavy 8 track and the 9.00 pick was spelled following a tenth over 1500m at Hawkesbury subsequently.

The six-year-old returned this spell with a length fifth in a Benchmark 100 handicap and, while he steps up in grade here, he boasts a good second-up record.

Tom Sherry’s mount gets in off a low weight in this contest and, having shown winning form here in the past, he is taken to salute for the first time at this level.

Wollombi to take out Tibbie Stakes

The Group 3 Yarraman Park Stud Tibbie Stakes over 1400m is the sixth race of the day at Newcastle.

WOLLOMBI carries top weight here and looks capable of delivering a victory racing third up this spell.

The 4.20 pick showed solid form in her last spell with her three victories including a near length success in the Group 3 The Vanity over 1400m at Flemington in February.

The four-year-old was spelled following a down the field effort when upped to 1600m for the Group 2 Kewney Stakes at the same venue the following month.

While Peter & Paul Snowden’s mare suffered a defeat at Benchmark 88 level over 1300m at Rosehill first up this time around, she was beaten less than one-and-a-half-lengths that day.

Sam Clipperton, on board that day and set to ride here, was again in the saddle when the filly placed third in the 1350m Listed Mona Lisa Stakes at Wyong at the start of the month.

The daughter of Extreme Choice has a wide alley here, but is usually ridden with restraint and she is selected to deliver a third-up victory.

Alegron to surprise in Gold Cup

The Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup is the feature race of the day, with the 2300m handicap looking like a fairly open contest.

ALEGRON has been out of form of late, but he represents a top stable and has shown he can compete at a higher level in the past.

Trained by James Cummings, the five-year-old placed third in the Group 1 Australian Derby over 2400m at Randwick in April last year.

The 21.00 pick also won the St Leger over 2800m at Flemington that year and came home fourth in the Group 1 South Australian Derby over 2500m at Morphettville.

The gelding hasn’t been seen to best effect so far in 2023, however it’s notable that his two runs this spell have both come over shorter.

While the selection struggled over 2100m when 11th in the Listed Wyong Gold Cup at the start of the month, he should appreciate the step up in distance here.

Zac Lloyd has partnered the pick in barrier trials in the past and the pair are taken to deliver a victory here.
