Australian Racing: Spirit Ridge ready to strike

There are no less than 13 meetings for punters to get stuck into this Saturday, including a bumper 10-race card at Rosehill.

Race 7 Rosehill

Spirit Ridge To Win @ 9/1

Race 1 Sandown Hillside

Fission To Win @ 16/5

Race 8 Gold Coast

Ashgrove To Win @ 4/1

Ridge for Cup success

The defection of Outlandos has left a field of 13 for the 2000m January Cup at Rosehill. The competitive contest is set to take place on a soft 6 track.

Chris Waller's Aleas is sure to have his supporters having drawn the rail. The five-year-old performed well when third over this track and trip on a good 3 track in November.

Preference here, however, is for the Annabel Neasham-trained Spirit Ridge, the winner of this race two years ago. The veteran delivered some solid efforts without winning last spell, including a fourth in the Group 3 Easter Cup at Caulfield.

Dylan Gibbons' mount has a solid record on tracks described as soft, winning three of his five starts, and there is every chance a victory can be recorded on Saturday.

Fission to score at Hillside

The opener at Sandown Hillside is a 1000m Benchmark 70 contest for three-year-olds and it is expected that Bistro, who is dropping in grade and should benefit from a good 4 track, will go off as favourite.

Trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman, the filly faded when attempting to make all in the Group 3 Neds Quezette Stakes over 1100m at Caulfield in August but had previously placed second over 955m at Moonee Valley.

Spelled after that Caulfield effort, she debuted with a win over this course and distance in December 2021 and a rail draw for Saturday's contest is a positive.

However, preference goes to the race fit Fission, who is untested at Group level but has shown solid form in this grade in recent starts.

Jamie Mott's mount was runner-up in Benchmark 70 contests on two of his last three outings, having been beaten less than half-a-length over 1000m at Moonee Valley in each of their outings.

While rain here wouldn't inconvenience, he is equally at home on the forecast good 4 going. A draw in six shouldn't be an issue for the son of Russian Revolution and a third career success could be delivered.

Ashgrove to take Wave

The Tab Wave is an intriguing 1800m weight for age contest set to take place at Gold Coast. A soft 6 track is expected for the event, the eighth on a nine-race card.

Ashgrove showed plenty of ability at Group level last spell and looks up to taking this contest. Tony Gollan's charge placed third in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas over 1600m last April. That effort came at Eagle Farm, the scene of his most recent victory.

The four-year-old has been brought along steadily this term, finishing down the field on his first two starts. The step up to 1500m brought about improved form when taking a Benchmark 70 event by a length last month.

A further step up in distance is expected to suit and proven wet track form should also put Ashgrove right in the frame to deliver a victory.
