In 1978 the name was changed to the Spring Champion Stakes and has remained that way ever since.

It was a Principal Race from 1971 to 1978, before being upgraded to Group 1 status from 1979.

Gay Icarus was the first winner of the Spring Champion Stakes back in 1971.
