AFL: State of play with two rounds left

There are just two rounds of the regular AFL season remaining and the battle to finish in the top eight and play finals could not be much tighter.

Following another exciting round of action in week 22, Collingwood sit top of the pile and have the minor premiership in the bag, but there is plenty to sort out below them.

The battle to finish in second spot behind the Pies is hot, as is the race to make the eight, with Adelaide in 12th spot on the ladder, still in the mix.

And just to wrap things up, at the other end of the ladder, the fight to avoid the wooden spoon will also go to the wire.

Collingwood back to winning ways

Collingwood returned to winning ways following back-to-back defeats, by seeing off Geelong by just eight points in a tight game on Friday night.

The Pies will be hoping their shaky patch is now out of the way and they can kick on towards finals and win the grand final.

They are priced at 3.50 to do just that and will look to build more momentum in their remaining two games against Brisbane and Essendon.

Battle for second

Finishing second on the ladder is crucial to a team’s chances of going on and winning the premiership and three sides are in the hunt.

Brisbane hold second spot for now, but are locked on 60 points with Port Adelaide who returned to winning ways at the weekend. Melbourne lost to Carlton and are four points behind in fourth place.

Brisbane must face Collingwood and St Kilda in their last two games. Port Adelaide play Fremantle and Richmond, while Melbourne are up against Hawthorn and Sydney.

All are tricky games in their own right and it will go right to the wire.

Carlton continue to fire

There is no stopping Carlton who wrapped up another impressive win against top opposition at the weekend.

This time they knocked over Melbourne by just four points to stay fifth on the ladder, just four points behind the Demons.

There is an outside chance Carlton could jump above Melbourne into fourth which would significantly boost their premiership hopes.

Either way they are the hot team in the competition and that momentum will be dangerous heading into finals.

Carlton can be backed at 7.00 to win the grand final.

Race to make the eight

St Kilda sit in sixth spot on 48 points and their win over Richmond may have been enough to seal their place in the top eight.

However seventh and eighth spot are still up for grabs with arguably six teams still in with a chance of taking them.

Sydney are in seventh with 46 points, then Western Bulldogs, Geelong and Essendon are all locked on 44.

Geelong in 11th have 42, Adelaide are two points below in 12th. With just two games remaining the two spots are up for grabs.

There are some tough games in there and Adelaide versus Sydney in particular stands out.

Wooden spoon battle

At the bottom West Coast and North Melbourne are on eight points, with the Eagles sitting rock bottom.

After they were hammered by 100 points against Fremantle in the derby on Saturday it is hard to see West Coast beating either the Bulldogs or Adelaide.

North Melbourne play Richmond and Gold Coast and are the hot fancies to avoid the wooden spoon.
