Sunday's A-League preview: Wanderers desperately need to dent City charge

A-League action comes double-handed on Sunday and Western Sydney Wanderers will be all to aware that any hopes of catching table toppers Melbourne City probably rest on a home success as they meet.

The league leaders are in town for the first game on Sunday, before two teams at the other end of the table clash when Newcastle Jets arrive at Mars Stadium to face Western United.

The A-League's current table toppers Melbourne City will make the journey to face third-placed Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday looking to make it four straight wins, while the hosts come into this crunch clash of the back of a loss against Perth Glory.

A second-half goal from Keegan Jelacic was enough on the day, as Wanderers lack of goals haunted them. In 11 games they've notched just a dozen goals. They are tight at the back, conceding only eight, but Melbourne City's record of 23 scored and seven shipped in ten games highlights the challenge in front of the hosts now.

The ladder leaders are 11/10 Full Time Result in this one, with the home side 5/2 to inflict only a second league defeat of the season on Melbourne.

Western Sydney have not let in more than one goal in a game since back in November but that will come under close scrutiny now. Melbourne City showcased their attacking qualities in their most recent match as they defeated Western United 4-0, with four different scorers emphasising the sort of all over the pitch threats they pose.

City are three points clear at the top having played two games less than second-placed Central Coast and it's hard to see anyone overhauling them now.

Jamie Maclaren has made some A-League history this term, scoring in ten games in a row, the first time has ever happened. He's just 8/11 Anytime Goalscorer for this clash.

Both teams are defensively solid but it's the visiting side that possess most attacking potency and a 1-0 away win is priced at 15/2 here.

Western aim to leapfrog misfiring Jets

OddsWestern United FC 17/20, Draw 11/4, Newcastle Jets 3/1

With four losses in their last five and seven in 11 overall, the Newcastle Jets are enduring a torrid season. They are the joint-lowest scorers in the A-League and have the worst goal difference.

If they have reason to be hopeful on Sunday, it comes from the knowledge that hosts Western United have shipped more goals than anyone else so far this season and are just one goal better off in terms of differential.

One point splits the sides, too, ahead of this crunch bottom of the table tussle, with Western knowing that a victory, priced at 17/20 Full Time Result, would see them leaping above their visitors in the table and potentially taking them as high as eighth spot.

Both teams head into this on the back of defeats in their most recent outing and will be hoping to get back on track with immediate effect.

2023 got started in a difficult manner last weekend for Western United as they were defeated 4-0 by the league leaders Melbourne City. They'll view this as a more realistic opportunity to get back to winning ways.

The Jets come to town after losing their previous two fixtures without scoring a goal and these are worrying times for boss Arthur Papas. His side have tallied just three goals in six away games so far.

That's a worrying trend for the Jets, but against the porous home defence, they'll fancy at least troubling the scorekeeper in this one and Both Teams to Score is 7/10 in this bottom of the table dust down.
