Super Rugby: A look at the week ahead

The 2023 Super Rugby campaign gets underway in the week ahead, while there is also A-League soccer and Test Match cricket on the agenda.

The Aussie sporting calendar will soon be hotting up with the return of the AFL and NRL seasons just around the corner. But there is still plenty to look forward to in the week ahead, especially for Rugby Union fans with the 2023 Super Rugby season about to start.

We jump straight into week one with six games on the fixture schedule and hopefully it will be an exciting start. As always there is a bumper A-League schedule with a couple of big games in particular to look forward to.

And last but not least the second Test between India and Australia will reach its conclusion and this one looks set to go right to the wire. So let’s take a look at what is on the schedule for the week ahead.

Super Rugby – Crusaders and Chiefs set to clash

The 2023 Super Rugby season gets underway with an intriguing clash between two of the hot fancies to go all the way and win the Grand Final. The Crusaders take on the Chiefs on Friday night with the home side priced at 9/25 to begin with a win while the visitors can be backed at 11/5.

To wrap up the action on Friday night the Waratahs, who are priced at 6/4, take on the Brumbies who are the hot fancies at 27/50. Saturday sees a jam-packed day of action with four games taking place.

The Reds also entertain the Hurricanes on Sunday before week one of the competition is wrapped up with the Western Force taking on the Rebels. Western Force are priced at 13/25 to start with a win, while the Rebels can be backed at 31/20.

A-League – Melbourne City need to bounce back

Matchday 18 gets underway with a cracking game on the Friday night when second-placed Central Coast Mariners take on Wellington Phoenix who sit in fifth.

The Mariners fought back to draw 2-2 away at Perth Glory at the weekend and can now be backed at 10/11 to beat the Nix, who are 11/4. The draw is priced at 11/5.

There are three games to look forward to on Saturday including a big one between ladder-leaders Melbourne City and Sydney FC. City suffered just their second defeat of the season when losing the derby against Melbourne Victory 3-2.

They will be keen to bounce back with a win and are priced at 17/20 to do just that. Sydney, who were held to a 1-1 draw with Brisbane Roar, can be backed at 13/5

The other two games on Saturday see the Newcastle Jets entertain struggling Western United before Western Sydney Wanderers host Macarthur FC.

On Sunday Melbourne Victory will be out to build on that derby win by pulling off another big win against high-flying Adelaide United. Victory are 6/5, Adelaide 21/10, while the draw is 9/4.

The last game of Matchday 18 sees Brisbane Roar, fresh from a solid draw with Sydney FC, taking on a Perth Glory side that has drawn three of the last four games. The draw can be backed at 12/5.

Test Cricket – Aussies fight back in Delhi

After being humiliated in the opening Test Match against India, Australia are at least making a fight of it in the Second Test in Delhi. As things stand there is a good chance the match will go to the fifth day that will be on Tuesday.

Australia made 263 runs in the first innings, a big improvement on their previous efforts when they were dismissed for 172 and 91 respectively.

They then bowled India out for 262 to leave the Test on an absolute knife edge. Much will depend on how Australia can bat in their second innings but if they can put on another 250 plus then they will fancy their chances of levelling the series.

India currently lead the four-match series 1-0 and the third Test is due to get underway on 1st March. But for now, all eyes are on Delhi.
