Australian Racing: Superset the one to watch

There are three meetings set to take place on Monday, with Bairnsdale, Albury and Armidale all due to stage racing action.

Race 6 Bairnsdale

Superset @ 7.50

Race 5 Albury

Check Side @ 3.20

Race 6 Armidale

Tryanza @ 4.20

Superset to salute at Bairnsdale

The sixth race of the day at Bairnsdale is a 1200m Benchmark 58 handicap expected to take place on a good 4 track.

Trained by Anthony & Sam Freedman, Dismount is expected to jump as favourite for his first start since a sixth at Bendigo in early December.

The gelding was beaten over four-and-a-half-lengths in a Benchmark 58 handicap on that occasion having shown good form over shorter prior.

Those previous efforts including a close second in a similar event over 1454 when racing on a good 4 track at Kyneton the previous month.

Lauren Burke’s mount should have no issue with the shorter distance here, having demonstrated good form over the trip in her first two outings.

The race-fit SUPERSET is the pick on this occasion, however, with the gelding having placed in two of his five starts this prep.

Those five outings include a good third when contesting Heat 4 of the Country Mile Series over 1400m at Pakenham in early March.

The 7.50 selection was beaten less than a length that day however he found metro racing too much when jumping at $51 for the Final of that series at Caulfield on 16th March.

The four-year-old hasn’t been beaten far in his two most recent outings including when less than a length behind the winner dropped to 1200m at Echuca earlier this month.

The son of Super One raced in a Benchmark 58 handicap on a soft 5 track that day and he looks up to returning to winning ways under Jackie Beriman.

Check to complete a double

The fifth race at Albury takes the eye with the 1400m Class 1 handicap attracting a field of 13.

A good 4 surface is likely, with top weight Artist sure to have his fans having shown good form in maiden company earlier this season.

The three-year-old debuted with a third when beaten less than a length over 1100m at Cootamundra in October.

The youngster went on to break his maiden upped to 1200m when getting home by a narrow margin at Moruya later that month.

While the Barbara, Joseph, Paul & Matt Jones-trained gelding could finish only seventh at Wagga first up this prep, he is expected to have improved for that effort.

The gelding steps up in distance here having race over 1200m in a Benchmark 58 handicap that day, however, Kym Davison’s CHECK SIDE is preferred in this event.

The pick returned with a good third when beaten two lengths in an 1175m maiden at this circuit in February. The three-year-old went on to deliver a respectable effort when fifth over this distance at Wagga a week later.

The 3.20 selection was beaten less than three-and-a-half-lengths that day and duly broke his maiden back over the 1175m distance here last month.

The son of Scissor Kick came home one-and-a-half-lengths clear of his rivals when finishing strongly having raced from off the pace.

Similar tactics are expected here and, with a good barrier, the pick looks capable of delivering his second win at his home track.

Tryanza goes for Armidale glory

The penultimate race on the Armidale card can go the way of top weight TRYANZA.

The gelding contests an 1100m Class 1 handicap with a soft 6 surface expected for the $30,000 event.

Trained by David Campbell, the 4.20 pick came home a length clear of his rivals when springing a $61 surprise in an 1106m maiden at Grafton in November.

The selection was spelled following that effort and he proved that was no fluke when half-a-length second in a 1025m contest back at Grafton when racing first up this prep.

The son of Outreach raced at this Class 1 level that day, doing best of those to race prominently in an 11-runner event.

Mitch Stapleford takes a valuable two kilograms off the pick’s back and, with further improvement expected, he looks up to overcoming a wide barrier in this event.
