Australian Football: Sydney aiming to book finals spot

Sydney FC can cement their place in the top six with a victory over Brisbane Roar on Monday night.

The race to make the top six has been a tight one and could still go right to the wire, however following results over the weekend, Sydney are looking good to make it.

Defeats for Newcastle Jets and Western United have helped Sydney’s cause and their destiny is now in their own hands with just two games remaining.

The Roar are not dead and buried just yet, but will need to beat Sydney at Suncorp to keep their faint finals hopes alive.

With the rest of Matchday 25 complete, both of these sides know exactly what they have to do to progress up the ladder.

Roar in last-chance saloon

The equation is simple for Brisbane, they must win their last two games of the season to have any chance of making the top six.

Even then they will need other results to go their way and it looks as though they are set for another season without finals football. They are priced at 15.00 to make it.

Roar will still be looking to end the season on a high and will be keen to put in a strong performance in their final home game.

The final game of the season sees them travel to take on Melbourne Victory. The Roar will also be keen to ensure they do not end up with the wooden spoon.

There are just two points and two places above bottom-of-the-ladder Victory, so there is an added incentive over the last two games.

Roar’s biggest problems this season has been not scoring enough goals and drawing too many games.

They have scored just 25 goals all season and have drawn nine games. If they had scored a few more and turned some of those draws into wins, then finals would have been on the cards.

These two sides have met on two occasions already this season. Roar earned a 3-1 win at the start of the campaign, but did have marquee signing Charlie Austin on board back then, and he chipped in with the opening goal.

Austin left soon after and Roar then fought out a 1-1 draw in Sydney back in February.

It could be another low-scoring affair against Sydney and under 2.5 goals in the game can be backed at 2.10. A 1-1 draw is also available at 6.50.

Their form in the last two games has been good and they have found their shooting boots all of a sudden. A 3-0 win over the Jets was followed by a 2-2 draw with Wellington Phoenix.

Jay O’Shea has scored in both of those games and is priced at 3.40 to score at anytime on Monday.

Roar have made no changes to their squad, with Robbie Kruse the only player out injured.

Sydney out to nail down finals

Sydney can wrap up a place in the finals with a win, but depending on other results they may already have done enough.

They are three points clear of seventh place and, with games against the Roar and Jets to come, they should do it and are priced at 1.04.

Sydney are unbeaten in the last three games and should be full of confidence following a 1-1 draw with high-flying Adelaide United and a 4-1 win over Perth Glory.

Steve Corica’s men will need to keep on in similar form if they are to make an impact in finals and challenge the likes of Melbourne City for grand final glory.

At least Adam Le Fondre is back among the goals after returning from injury. He has scored in each of the last two games and is priced at 2.05 to score anytime on Monday.

Diego Caballo remains in the treatment room, but apart from him Corica has a fully fit squad to choose from.
