Basketball: Sydney Kings eye back-to-back titles

The 2023/24 NBL season is fast approaching in Australia and the Sydney Kings look the team to beat once again.

The NBL is the premier professional men’s basketball league for Australia and New Zealand and the action is set to get underway on Thursday 28th September.

10 teams will battle it out over 28 games, 14 home, 14 away, during the regular season, before finals get underway.

Pre-season has already started as each team prepares for the new campaign, so let’s take a look at the current outright odds for 2023/24.

Sydney Kings

The Sydney Kings are the current reigning champions after beating the New Zealand Breakers in the 2023 grand final.

They look the team to beat once again and are priced at 3.60 to go on and win the grand final in the season ahead.

The Kings have enjoyed great success in the NBL when winning the regular season on seven occasions, more than any other side. They have also won the grand final five times.

Sydney have strengthened further with the additions of Sam Timmins and Alex Toohey.

Melbourne United

Melbourne are another team to have done well down the years in the NBL, and 2023/24 campaign has the potential to bring more success.

They are priced at 5.50 to go on and add another grand final to the six they have won already.

The last came in 2021 and they will be going all out for glory in the season ahead.

Melbourne have added Robert Loe to their roster for the season ahead, which begins when they take on Melbourne Phoenix in round one.

Phoenix can be backed at 11.00 to cause an upset and win the grand final.

Perth Wildcats

The Perth Wildcats are the most successful team of the NBL era, when being crowned champions on 10 occasions.

Their most recent success was in 2020 and they have also finished runner-up on six occasions.

The Wildcats also hold the record for consecutive finals appearances in any major Australian professional sports competition.

Perth Wildcats will be keen to snap the drought of failing to win the grand final in the last three seasons and they can be backed at 6.50 to do it.

Jordan Usher has been added to the roster for 2023/24.

Best of the rest

The grand final winner is likely to come from one of the three above teams, but upsets can happen and the competition is not a three-horse race.

New Zealand Breakers showed what they are capable of when making the grand final last season and have strengthened further with the addition of Justinian Jessup.

The Breakers are priced at 11.00 to go one step further and win the grand final in the season ahead.

Illawarra Hawks are also priced at 11.00 and have got Gary Clark on board to help them.

Elsewhere, Cairns Taipans and Tasmania JackJumpers are both 13.00, while Adelaide 36ers and Brisbane Bullets are 15.00.

The Bullets have signed Rocco Zikarsky for the season but will need a lot to go their way to win the grand final.
