AFL Team Profile: Sydney Swans

Sydney Swans made it in to finals last season before falling at the first hurdle and they will be out to go further in the 2024 AFL season.

It has been an off-season of change at the club with a number of experienced players arriving to help out the young guns.

Coach John Longmire will be hoping it pays off and the Swans can be backed at 1.40 to go on and make the top eight once again.

Sydney will no doubt be aiming much higher and they will be many people's roughie to go all the way and win the grand final. They can be backed at 9.00 to do just that.

Here is all you need to know about the Swans heading into the 2024 season.

Swans make finals again

The 2023 AFL season was a bittersweet one for the Swans as they attempted to bounce back from grand final heartache the season before.

Sydney were smashed by Geelong in the 2022 grand final and in the end they bounced back well.

They will have been delighted to make finals, something that Geelong failed to do, winning 12 of the 23 games played, but will be disappointed to then lose in the first week.

The Swans were involved in a number of tight games throughout the season that could have gone either way, but they just did enough to make the top eight.

Just four points separated them from the Western Bulldogs in ninth, but they could not go on and make the grand final as they did in 2022.

Indeed, they went out early when losing another tight one against Carlton. The home side won by six points and it was back to the drawing board for the Swans.

Lessons have clearly been learnt and changes have been made as the Swans go in search of their first grand final win since 2012.

Longmire has a very capable list to work with and it could be another exciting season for the Swans faithful.

Key players

The Swans will have to do without AFL legend Lance Franklin this season after the gun forward announced his retirement from the game.

However, there is a lot to like about the Swans list, which is stacked with talented youngsters and also has a nice mix of experienced operators.

Some seasoned campaigners were needed and the Swans have recruited well in the off-season to address that issue.

Brodie Grundy, Taylor Adams, James Jordon and Joel Hamling, who have over 550 AFL appearances between them, have arrived to help the young guns.

All four players have key roles to play in the season ahead, particularly Hamling, who will help shore up a defence that has been a cause for concern.

Elsewhere, the Swans are well stocked with midfielders and forwards.

With no Franklin, 2024 could present an opportunity for Logan McDonald to come out of the shadows and shine.

He booted 32 goals last season and will be looking to make even more of an impact this term. Tom Papley will also be keen to take his game to another level after kicking 37.

Also keep an eye out for Angus Sheldrick, who is priced at 21.00 to scoop the Rising Star award for 2024.

Demons first up for Swans

Sydney are involved in the very first game of the 2024 AFL season when they entertain Melbourne on Thursday 7th March.

The Swans are 1.62 to begin with a win, while the Demons can be backed at 2.30.

The Friday after they travel to the MCG to take on reigning premiers Collingwood and are 2.80 to pull off an upset.
