Alex Michelsen v Alex de Minaur: Australian Open preview

Alex de Minaur carries the hopes of a nation as the men's eighth seed is the last home singles player standing at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

American contender Alex Michelsen stands in the way of De Minaur and the quarter-finals, where a showdown with top seed Jannik Sinner could be on the cards.

De Minaur the final home contender

De Minaur is looking to become the first home men's winner at the Australian Open in 49 years and the 25-year-old will now aim to make a statement by going past the fourth round for the first time.

He has fallen at this stage in each of the last three years in Melbourne Park, but he's set up for a great chance to reach a maiden quarter-final in his home Grand Slam, as the 1.25 favourite to defeat Michelsen on Monday.

Having reached the quarter-finals at all three of the other Grand Slam events, the Aussie ace will be desperate to take his chance on home turf.

After Britain's Jack Draper knocked Aleksandar Vukic out on Friday in five sets, De Minaur was left as the last Australian man standing.

Djokovic a fan of improved Aussie

Novak Djokovic knows what it takes to get the job done out on Rod Laver Arena in the biggest moments and the 10-time Australian Open winner had words of encouragement for De Minaur.

The Serb said he has seen 'terrific improvement' in the play coming from De Minaur, adding the attacking qualities required to trouble the world's best.

"I think his serve became a big weapon, maybe it wasn’t before," said Djokovic.

"He was always fast, so he kept that, I mean that speed on the court. I think he’s coming in to, he’s approaching (the net) much more than he used to do.

"We all know how good he is defending, but his offence has improved a lot, his court positioning has improved."

De Minaur is priced at 3.40 to come through his latest assignment in four sets.

Michelsen aims for another scalp

Californian Michelsen, aged 20, is making quite a splash in Melbourne. His previous best at Grand Slams were a couple of second rounds at the US Open, but he has been making headlines across the opening week.

He dumped out 11th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in four sets in round one and hasn't dropped a set in subsequent wins over Australia's James McCabe and Karen Khachanov.

He lost just 11 games in disposing of the 16th seed on Saturday, causing another upset, and is priced at 4.00 to continue his excellent run by ending Aussie hopes at Melbourne Park for another year.
