Jannik Sinner started what turned out to be an outstanding 2024 season by claiming his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open and the Italian is among the favourites to triumph in Melbourne in January 2025.
The Italian came from two sets down to defeat Daniil Medvedev in the 2024 Melbourne final, going on to triumph at the US Open and the ATP Finals, before helping his country successfully retain the Davis Cup.
Sinner shared the four Grand Slam titles with Carlos Alcaraz in 2024, while ten-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic can never be ruled out.
Jannik Sinner - 2.75
Carlos Alcaraz - 3.40
Novak Djokovic - 4.00
Daniil Medvedev - 8.00
Alexander Zverev - 11.00
Alex de Minaur - 51.00
Jannik Sinner - 2.75
Sinner has emerged from the pack as the best player in the world right now, especially with French Open and Wimbledon champion Alcaraz having seen his form dip in the latter part of the season.
Twenty-three-year-old Sinner took out two Grand Slam titles in 2024, while he also reached the semi-finals in Paris and the quarter-finals in SW19, leaving him with a 23-2 record at the majors.
Not only capable of such a high level, Sinner has become consistent as well, with his huge forehand and serve major weapons against any opponent.
He did lose all three meetings with Alcaraz in 2024, but he won both of his clashes with Djokovic, including in the Melbourne semi-finals, where he prevailed in four sets.
Carlos Alcaraz - 3.40
Spaniard Alcaraz claimed both the French Open and Wimbledon titles in 2024, yet bizarrely the season ended on a low as his form seemed to desert him.
However, the 21-year-old already has four Grand Slam titles to his name, so is clearly one of the most outstanding talents to emerge in many years.
The Australian Open is the one Grand Slam he has yet to win, with his 2024 run coming to an end in the quarter-finals as he was beaten in four sets by Alexander Zverev.
Novak Djokovic - 4.00
Time is surely against Djokovic, but adding old rival Andy Murray to his coaching team shows that the Serb is far from done with trying to add to his Grand Slam tally.
Ten times he has reached the Australian Open final and ten times he has been crowned champion, while 12 months ago it took a fully-firing Sinner to deny him at the semi-final stage.
Djokovic won three Grand Slam titles in 2023, so there is most definitely life left in the old dog yet, while he was beaten in the Wimbledon final earlier this year by Alcaraz to prove that he is far from done at the elite level.
Daniil Medvedev - 8.00
Medvedev has to be seen as a genuine contender, having reached the Melbourne final in 2021, 2022 and 2024, however his record in finals is definitely of some concern.
Six Grand Slam finals have yielded just one title, that coming at the 2021 US Open, where he overpowered Djokovic in three straight sets.
The Russian has, however, twice thrown away a two-set lead in an Australian Open final, doing so against Rafael Nadal in 2022 and repeating the trick against Sinner in 2024.
Doubts about his temperament on the big occasion need to be answered.
Alex de Minaur - 51.00
Australia’s main hope of a long-awaited home success in Melbourne is of course Alex de Minaur, who enjoyed a fine 2024 despite a number of injury problems.
The Sydney native reached three Grand Slam quarter-finals and as a result qualified for the ATP Finals for the first time, however, he has yet to make the jump to making the semi-finals of a major and has several big players standing in his way.
