Can Alex de Minaur end his Grand Slam wait in 2025?

Alex de Minaur began his 2025 quest for a maiden Grand Slam title by reaching the quarter-finals of his home Australian Open, but he has still yet to make it past that stage and compete for a major crown.

The 25-year-old Sydney native has now made the last eight at the last four Grand Slam tournaments, having only previously reached the quarter-finals of the 2020 US Open.

He is without doubt the outstanding Aussie player of his generation, but the big question is can he deliver a first Australian men's Grand Slam singles success since Lleyton Hewitt triumphed at Wimbledon back in 2002?

Huge hurdle stands in De Minaur's way

Reaching the last eight of a major is now proving to be well in range for De Minaur, but going any further is a huge challenge given the strength of the players at the very top of the men’s game.

His run the French Open quarters last year was ended in straight sets by eventual beaten finalist Alexander Zverev, while his efforts at Wimbledon came to an abrupt halt as injury prevented him from facing Novak Djokovic in the last eight.

De Minaur would suffer more injury woe at the US Open, where he was unable to give his best against Jack Draper, losing their quarter-final match-up 6-3 7-5 6-2.

2025 started with another run to the last eight of a Grand Slam, but home fans hoping for something to cheer were left to see exactly the size of the task facing De Minaur as he was dismantled by eventual winner Jannik Sinner.

Now two-time defending Australian Open champion Sinner dished out a 6-3 6-2 6-1 thrashing and, with De Minaur having also lost in three sets to Dominic Thiem at the 2020 US Open, that means he has currently yet to win a set in a Grand Slam quarter-final.

De Minaur certainly never lacks for effort and is one of the quickest players around the court, but he may be lacking the big weapon that most of his rivals possess.

He served 33 aces in his five matches in Melbourne, which is a respectable total and he has clearly improved his serve in recent times to become more effective.

However, when rallying against the likes of Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Zverev, the Aussie is at a huge disadvantage due to the power of his opponents’ groundstrokes.

Overcoming that issue is a tough thing to achieve, but one that Hewitt was able to do when he was at the top of the game and a bit of advice and guidance from the two-time Grand Slam champion could aid De Minaur in his quest.

Can the Demon make the leap?

At the moment is looks like a huge ask for De Minaur to go all the way at a Grand Slam, with Sinner and Alcaraz dominating in recent times.

Italian ace Sinner has won the last three hardcourt majors, while Spanish star Alcaraz already has four Grand Slam titles to his name and he is still only 21 years of age.

A glance at the head-to-head records give you a feel for just how tough De Minaur finds it against the very best players, with a combined 25 matches against Sinner, Alcaraz, Zverev and Novak Djokovic yielding a mere three victories among 22 defeats.

All four Grand Slam meetings with those four players have also been lost, so De Minaur clearly has a gap to the top which he has to try and find a way to bridge.

Sadly that looks unlikely to happen in 2025, but one thing is for sure, the Aussie will never be found wanting for commitment and a desire to win and, if the top players stumble, he will be one of the first to take advantage.
