French Open history

Since it was first played as a Grand Slam, the French Open has carved a unique niche in the tennis calendar as the sole Grand Slam played on clay and in the men's singles Rafael Nadal is the standout all-time performer.

The Spanish powerhouse claimed the title in Paris on an incredible 14 occasions, the last of which came in 2022, with his first having been secured in 2005.

Swedish legend Bjorn Borg is a six-time champion, while Mats Wilander, Ivan Lendl, Gustavo Kuerten and Novak Djokovic are all three-time winners.

Australia dominated the event in the 1960s, winning seven titles in eight years thanks to Rod Laver (2), Roy Emerson (2), Ken Rosewall, Fred Stolle and Tony Roche.

The Aussies had earlier enjoyed success thanks to Rosewall (1953) Lew Hoad (1956) and Mervyn Rose (1958).

In the women's singles American legend Chris Evert has won a record seven French Open titles, with German all-time great Steffi Graf one behind her, while Swiatek is already closing in on both of them following her recent domination on the red clay of Paris.

Australian Margaret Court claimed five French Open titles, two in the amateur era and three in the open era, while compatriots Lesley Turner (2) and Evonne Goolagong have also triumphed in the French capital.

Ash Barty became the most recent Aussie champion at the French Open in 2019 as she defeated Markéta Vondroušová 6-1 6-3 to secure her third and final Grand Slam title.
