Jannik Sinner v Alex de Minaur: Australian Open preview

Alex de Minaur will be hoping to keep his Australian Open dream alive when he takes on the formidable Jannik Sinner in Wednesday’s quarter-final.

Having earned an impressive 6-0 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 win over American Alex Michelsen in the last round, De Minaur now has Sinner in his sights in Melbourne.

De Minaur not just contest with quarter-final spot

Enjoying a dream run in his home Grand Slam event, Australia’s De Minaur is not simply satisfied with reaching the quarter-finals and wants this ride to continue.

De Minaur produced an assured performance against Michelsen with a straight-set victory to break new ground and reach the last eight in Melbourne for the first time in his career.

Despite taking that significant step in a major tournament, the 25-year-old from Sydney has no plans to show up on Wednesday to just make up the numbers against world number one Sinner.

"There's nothing I want more than to play well here in Australia in front of you guys. I'm glad I finally made it to the quarter-finals here but let's go for bigger and better things," De Minaur said.

Now the eighth seed De Minaur is the 5.00 underdog to beat Sinner, who he has not managed to beat in their nine previous meetings.

Sinner showing grit in Melbourne

Having to battle with temperatures of 32C on Rod Laver Arena in his last match against Holger Rune, Sinner showed grit and determination to win 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-2 against the Dane.

At times having the wrap ice towels around his neck during the changeovers, Sinner was clearly feeling the effects of the conditions in Melbourne.

Visibly shaking at some stages, Sinner overcame the conditions but admitted they did affect the way he went about his match against Rune.

"I knew in my mind even before the match I would struggle today,” Sinner said. "This morning was a very strange morning because I didn't even warm up today, trying to go on court as fit as I could."

Cooler conditions are expected in Melbourne in midweek, which will come as a huge relief to Sinner, who is the 1.16 favourite to progress past De Minaur and secure a place in this year’s semi-finals.
