Tristan Boyer v Alex de Minaur: Australian Open preview

The second round of the Australian Open 2025 serves up an intriguing clash on Thursday as home favourite Alex de Minaur takes America’s Tristan Boyer in Melbourne.

The match, which is second up on Rod Laver Arena, pits Australia's top-ranked player against a qualifier who had no Grand Slam singles experience until this week.

De Minaur, the No.8 men’s seed, began his Melbourne campaign with a convincing straight-sets victory over Botic van de Zandschulp, showcasing his trademark speed and determination.

The 25-year-old Aussie is riding high on confidence, having reached a career-high ranking of World No. 6 in July 2024.

Boyer, on the other hand, had to battle through qualifying to earn his spot in the main draw while dealing with the news of the raging fires that have destroyed his home state of California.

The 23-year-old overcame early nerves and an experienced opponent to secure a five-set win over Federico Coria in the first round.

De Minaur's stellar form continues

Alex de Minaur will be looking to kick on after putting together an impressive 2024 campaign that saw him claim his first ATP 500 title and make his debut at the end-of-year ATP Tour Finals.

He has reached the fourth round in Melbourne for the last three years and went out in a rollercoaster five-setter to Andrey Rublev 12 months ago.

De Minaur’s recent performances, including a quarterfinal run at the US Open, have solidified his position as a serious contender in Grand Slams.

In his opening match on Tuesday, he demonstrated his improved serving, court craft, and mental fortitude to run through his highly-rated opponent in double-quick time.

He needed only 26 minutes to claim the first set on Rod Laver Arena before disposing of Van de Zandschulp 6-1, 7-5, 6-4

De Minaur will benefit from the vociferous support of the home fans, who have cheered him to victory many times before.

He now owns a 15-7 record at the Australian Open and will be looking to take care of his business against the world number 136 as quickly as possible.

Boyer faces tough challenge

Boyer, while less experienced at this level, will be eager to make his mark against a top-10 player.

Long considered one of America’s top young prospects, the right-hander has had to earn his stripes on the Challenger Tour.

Like his coach Alejandro Fabbri, Boyer is most at home on clay courts. His three Challenger Tour wins at Yukutan, Campinas and Montevideo all came on the surface.

His first-round victory owed much to his powerful baseline game and tactical awareness as he secured a 6-3 6-7 4-6 7-5 6-1 victory on an outside court.

To go from that to facing a home favourite like De Minaur on Rod Laver Arena will be the next test that he needs to pass.
