Wimbledon 2025: Two Aussies left after string of losses

There were 16 Australian players spread across the men's and women's singles draw when Wimbledon got underway, but that number has been hacked back to just two as the first week draws to a close.

All seven Australian women have been eliminated from the tournament, while in the men's draw only 11th seed Alex de Minaur and Jordan Thompson remain out of an Aussie contingent that began with nine men.

De Minaur is back in action on Monday and faces seven-time champion Novak Djokovic in a blockbuster fourth round match-up, while Thompson takes to the court on Sunday and faces a huge task against fifth seed Taylor Fritz.

De Minaur ready for Djokovic clash

Alex de Minaur has made quiet progress through to round for at SW19, taking care of Roberto Carballés Baena, Arthur Cazaux and August Holmgren for the loss of just one set.

However, there is a huge step up in class on the horizon, with Novak Djokovic still dreaming of matching Roger Federer's record of eight Wimbledon titles and the Serb has also dropped just a single set in his three victories.

Of course, De Minaur and Djokovic should have played each other in the Wimbledon quarter-finals 12 months ago, only for injury to prevent the Aussie from taking to the court.

ADM has not enjoyed the best of seasons to date and is without a title since Rosmalen just over a year ago, so it is perhaps no surprise to see him out at 5.00 to defeat 1.16 Djokovic.

The two players have faced each other just three times previously, with Djokovic holding a 2-1 advantage and having won their only match at a Grand Slam - a 6-2 6-1 6-2 victory in the fourth round of the 2023 Australian Open.

Jordan Thompson has joined De Minaur in reaching the fourth round, which looked unlikely when he dropped the first two sets of his opener against Czech Vít Kopřiva.

Thompson roared back to win in five and was also taken the distance in round two by Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi, before taking care of Italian Luciano Darderi in four sets in the third round.

Next up is fifth seed Taylor Fritz, who has been on court for even longer than Thompson, having won three five-set marathons to keep his campaign alive.

Positive thoughts for Thompson come from having defeated Fritz 6-4 6-4 on the grass at Queen's Club just over a year ago and the 31-year-old Sydney native will be desperate to make the fourth round of a Grand Slam for just the third time in his career.

Thompson is the 5.00 outsider to defeat 1.16 Fritz and, while both players would relish a shorter match, another five-setter can be backed at 4.00 and the American is 5.50 to prevail in five.

Apart from De Minaur and Thompson, only Aleksandar Vukic and Rinky Hijikata won their first-round matches, while 20th seed Alexei Popyrin will have been particularly disappointed to have lost his opener against British wildcard Arthur Fery.

Kasatkina the lone women's winner

In the women's draw seven Australians took to the court in the first round and 16th seed Daria Kasatkina was the only one of the group to make it through to round two.

Kasatkina beat Emiliana Arango 7-5 6-3 in her opener, before being stretched to three sets in round two by Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu, setting up a showdown with 19th seed Liudmila Samsonova in the third round.

Russian Samsonova had beaten another Aussie, Maya Joint, in the first round and proved far too strong for former French Open semi-finalist Kasatkina as she swept to a 6-2 6-3 victory to progress to the SW19 fourth round.
