What is The Big Dance?

The Big Dance is a thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds and upwards and is raced under handicap conditions at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney.

It is raced over 1600m with a 62kg maximum weight.

The Big Dance is restricted to those horses who contest one of 25 selected Country Cup races throughout the year in NSW.

The Big Dance appears to be the latest effort from Racing NSW to grab a share of the Spring Carnival riches.

When is The Big Dance?

The Big Dance will be raced on the same day as the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday 7th November.

It is not the first time that Racing NSW has gone up against Victoria, after The Everest and the Golden Eagle were scheduled on the same day as the Caulfield Cup and Derby day.

The first Tuesday in November is ‘sacred’ to racing in Melbourne, but that has not stopped Racing NSW going up against the race that stops a nation.

However, Racing NSW say The Big Dance is not aiming to take the 'gloss' off the Melbourne Cup, and will 'complement' the race.

Can I watch The Big Dance?

Yes. The Big Dance will be free-to-air on Channel 7 and on the 7Plus app.

Rustic Steel was the winner of the very first running of The Big Dance in 2022 for trainer Kris Lees and jockey Nash Rawiller.

What is the prize money for The Big Dance?

The total prize fund for the Big Dance was $2million in 2022, but this has been raised to $3million for the 2023 edition.

The winner will take home approximately 60% of the prize money.
