Australian Racing: The Big Kahuna to rule at Warrnambool

There are three meetings taking place on Tuesday, including at Warrnambol, where they are set to stage a mixed flat and jumps card.

Race 8 Warrnambool

The Big Kahuna @ 3.20

Race 7 Goulburn

Missile Seeker @ 3.00

Race 8 Warwick

Passionate Rebel @ 3.00

Kahuna to complete a double

The finale at Warrnambool is a 1700m Benchmark 64 handicap set to take place on a soft 7 surface.

Active Duty has been in good form since debuting here at the end of December, winning once and placing three times from his four starts.

The three-year-old has been ridden by his jockey here Fred Kersley on each occasion, including when a length second over 1400m at Terang on his penultimate start.

The gelding contested a Benchmark 58 handicap that day and registered his first victory when returning to maiden company for a 1600m event at the same venue on 5th March.

The son of National Defense has placed on a wet track in the past but, while he rates highly, THE BIG KAHUNA is the selection on this occasion.

The pick came home just over two lengths second when racing in a metro Benchmark 62 handicap at Morphettville in July 2022.

The five-year-old race on a soft 5 track that day, but has made just two starts since, including when beaten less than half-a-length at the same venue in September 2022.

The 3.20 selection joined the Paul Preusker stable ahead of his return to action and he jumped at $16 when making his return over 1600m at Bendigo on 11th February.

Tom Madden’s mount defied a wide barrier to come home a length clear of his rivals in a Benchmark 64 handicap that day, with the fifth home going on to salute since.

The gelding has an insider barrier here and, with the wet track no issue, he is taken to complete a double.

Missile to fire at Goulburn

There are eight races scheduled for Goulburn, with the seventh event a 1300m Benchmark 66 handicap.

A soft 5 track is forecast, with MISSILE SEEKER the pick to deliver a victory for the Gary Portelli stable.

The gelding ended his last prep with a third in a 1400m Class 1 contest at Hawkesbury in November.

The 3.00 selection raced on a good 4 track that day, but has demonstrated his best form on wet tracks in the past, including when winning his maiden on a heavy surface last year.

The son of Smart Missile took a step forward in his second barrier trial at Warwick Farm recording a fourth over 1207m on 12th February.

That effort preceded a narrow defeat when runner-up in an 1100m Benchmark 66 handicap on a heavy 8 track at Nowra two weeks later.

Alysha Collett’s mount has a good alley here and looks capable of resuming with a win.

Rebel tipped for for Warwick success

The eighth race at Warwick sees a field of nine set to go to post following Turn Table’s defection.

The Dissident gelding PASSIONATE REBEL placed third when contesting a 1540m Class 3 event on the polytrack at Gold Coast in December.

The 3.00 pick was spelled following that effort and he returned with a win, racing from off the pace over 1500m at Kilcoy last month.

The four-year-old came home two lengths clear of his rivals on a soft 5 track.

Similar tactics are expected in this event, with barrier eight unlikely to pose any issues and apprentice Jack Baker taking the ride.
