AFL: The big winners from the AFL Draft

The 2023 AFL Draft is done and dusted with 64 players seeing their dreams come true over two hectic nights of activity.

The AFL Draft marks the two biggest nights of the year for the recruiters and it is vitally important they get it right.

As always some teams have played a blinder with their picks, so let’s take a look at the big winners from the AFL Draft.

Gold Coast Suns

The Gold Coast Suns are arguably the biggest winners of the AFL Draft after they secured four of their very highly-rated local products.

Academy quartet Jed Walter, Ethan Read, Jake Rodgers and Will Graham were all in demand, but the Suns put a lot of hard work into keeping them, and it paid off.

It has been described as the best draft haul since its inception, and it is no surprise that Suns officials are delighted with the outcome.

Time will ultimately tell, but it has also been suggested that this group of players now has the Suns set up for the next 15 years.

The Suns can be backed at 34.00 to win the 2024 grand final. It may be a bit too early for success just yet, but the future looks very bright.

Adelaide Crows

The Crows are another big winner from the AFL Draft when landing Dan Curtin with pick 8.

Curtin was very highly rated in the draft and Adelaide did not have to give up too much to get him on board.

Crows national recruitment manager Hamish Ogilvie says everything went to plan during the AFL Draft and they are 'delighted’' to land Curtin.

The same can be said of Charlie Edwards who was taken with pick 21 and Oscar Ryan, pick 27.

The Crows are priced at 15.00 to win the 2024 AFL grand final.

Essendon Bombers

The Bombers may have missed out on Curtin, but were delighted to get a deal done for Nate Caddy with pick 10, ahead of West Coast Eagles.

Essendon declared themselves 'really happy' with the way the AFL Draft panned out as they also landed defender Luamon Lual and Archie Roberts with picks 39 and 54 respectively.

Essendon can be backed at 2.75 to finish in the top eight in the 2024 AFL campaign.

North Melbourne Kangaroos

The Kangaroos had a plan to pick the best that was available to them and they executed it well, landing exciting midfielder Colby McKercher with pick 2.

Highly-rated forward Zane Duursma also arrived with pick 4, with the Kangaroos claiming he and McKercher were 'too hard to pass up on'.

North Melbourne also managed to land speedy ruckman Taylor Goad, just ahead of Adelaide, with pick 20.

The Kangaroos are, however, still priced at 2.50 to finish the 2024 AFL season with the most losses.

West Coast Eagles

The Eagles have to be included in the list after walking away with the best player in the pool thanks to pick 1.

West Coast have snared Harley Reid and they believe he is the perfect player to help them get back to where they want to be after a few disappointing campaigns.

Reid is known for his power and aggression, attributes West Coast will need as they look to climb the ladder again.

They are also priced at 2.50 to finish next season with the most losses.
