The Galaxy is a Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race which is raced under handicap conditions at Rosehill Racecourse, Sydney, in March each year.

The Galaxy is part of the Sydney Autumn Carnival and is raced over 1100 metres, with $1million in prize money up for grabs.

It is seen as the perfect lead-up race for the $2.5million Group 1 T J Smith Stakes, so always attracts a strong field of sprinters.

Star sprinters such as Nature Strip have won The Galaxy in the past and Ozzmosis could be the one to beat in 2024.

The Galaxy date

The Galaxy is part of the Sydney Autumn Carnival and takes place in late March each year.

The 2024 edition will take place on Saturday 23rd March, which means it also clashes with the All-Star Mile in Melbourne.

The Galaxy is raced on Golden Slipper day and is one of five Group 1 races to be held on the day.

The exact start time for The Galaxy has yet to be revealed, but in 2023 it was race 9 on a bumper card.

As well as The Galaxy, the Golden Slipper, the Rosehill Guineas, the Ranvet Stakes and George Ryder Stakes are all on the card.

The Galaxy is raced at Rosehill Gardens racecourse in Sydney, but that has not always been the case.

Up until 2012, The Galaxy was raced at Randwick racecourse in Sydney, but switched to Rosehill in 2013.

The Galaxy will be shown free-to-air on Channel 7.

The Galaxy was first raced in 1972 and was won by a horse named Playbill.

Up until 1978, The Galaxy was a Principal Race and after one year of being a Listed Race, it became a Group 2 in 1980.

The Galaxy became a Group 1 in 1984 and has remained so ever since.

Randwick racecourse hosted The Galaxy from the start, while Warwick Farm racecourse was also the venue in 2007.

Rosehill Gardens has been the venue since 2013.

The prize money pot for The Galaxy was raised from $700,000 to $1million in 2022.

The winner will take home $580,000, second wins $190,000 and third $98,000.

Sixth, seventh and eighth all pick up $10,000 for their efforts, while ninth and 10th win $8000.

Mariamia was the winner of the 2023 edition of The Galaxy for trainer Joseph Pride and jockey Tyler Schiller.

There have been some famous winners of The Galaxy throughout the years, including Nature Strip in 2019 and In Her Time in 2018.

Ozzmosis is the hot fancy at 4.00 to win the 2024 The Galaxy, while Aft Cabin can be backed at 6.50 and Private Eye 7.50.
