The Metropolitan is one of the main races in the Sydney Spring Carnival and takes place in early October each year.

The 2024 edition of The Metropolitan will be held on Saturday 5th October.

The exact time for The Metropolitan has yet to be announced, but in 2023 it was Race 9 on the card, and is likely to be the same again in 2024.

The Metropolitan always takes place at Randwick Racecourse, Sydney, New South Wales.

There has been just one occasion when the race was held elsewhere. That was in 1983 when Warwick Farm Racecourse hosted The Metropolitan.

The total amount of prize money for The Metropolitan stands at a cool $750,000.

The winner will earn $430,000, while second place will take home $141,000. $71,500 will go to third place.

The top 10 all earn prize money, with ninth and 10th picking up $7,500 for their efforts.

The Metropolitan history

The Metropolitan was first raced in 1863 and was then known as the Great Metropolitan Stakes.

It has also been known as the Metropolitan Stakes and the Metropolitan Handicap. From 1979 onwards, it has simply been known as The Metropolitan.

The Metropolitan was a Principal Race up until 1978, before being award Group 1 status and has remained that way ever since.

The Metropolitan was first raced over 3200m, and has also been raced over 2600m.

However from 2001 onwards, the race distance has remained at 2400m.

The Metropolitan past winners

Regno was the very first winner of The Metropolitan in 1863, while Just Fine was the most recent winner in 2023.

There have been some famous winners of The Metropolitan, including Railings in 2005 and Tawqeet in 2006.

Both horses went on to win the Caulfield Cup in their start, and are just two of fours horses to complete The Metropolitan/Caulfield Cup double.

Eliyass is the hot fancy at 6.00 to win the 2024 edition of The Metropolitan, while Fawkner Park is available at 7.50.

Riff Rocket is 11.00 and Land Legend 13.00.

Just Fine is 34.00 to win it again and go back-to-back.
