NRL: Tigers set for stern test at Knights

Rock-bottom Wests Tigers have another tough task ahead of them on Friday night as they make the trip to a Newcastle Knights side that will still harbour hopes of a top-eight finish this season.

The Wests Tigers are running the risk of their first-ever wooden spoon since joining the NRL back in 2000 and Friday’s game is unlikely to help their cause in avoiding bottom spot this season.

Eight games to avoid wooden spoon

Wests do have time to turn things around and avoid the wooden spoon but they need to pick up wins quickly or run the risk of being cut adrift at the bottom.

The Tigers are stuck on 12 points after picking up just three wins in their first 16 games of the season so far.

St. George Illawarra Dragons are also down on 12 points, while there are four points between the bottom two and the Canterbury Bulldogs in 15th place.

It looks like it could well be between the Tigers, Dragons and Bulldogs to determine which unfortunate side is handed the unwanted wooden spoon this season.

Scoring tries has been the issue for the Tigers, as they have only managed 30 points in their last four games, while at the other end conceding 166.

Playmakers Luke Brooks and Api Koroisau, who have been out with a hamstring and jaw injury respectively, have been sorely missed recently.

The pair are edging closer to a return but the duo are still thought to be at least a week away from a return and will miss the trip to Newcastle.

Going in search of that fourth win of the campaign, the Tigers are certainly the underdogs at 4.60 for the win and 1.91 to come out on top with +14.5 in the Line market.

Knights looking to break unwanted trend

Things have not exactly been all roses at the Newcastle Knights either but they still have the opportunity to sneak their way into the top eight.

To do that Newcastle will need to find the consistency that has been missing in this campaign so far.

The Knights have not managed to win consecutive games all season but might be able to break that trend on home soil on Friday night, following a 66-0 thrashing of the Bulldogs in their last outing.

It was the type of performance against Canterbury that can help turn a season and the Knights will be hoping it can kick-start a run of results to help them chase down the top eight.

England winger Dom Young has been enjoying another standout season and is the competition’s joint-leading tryscorer with Maika Sivo on 16.

Keep an eye out for Young in the First and Anytime tryscorer markets for this clash on Friday night.
