A-League: Torres key to Mariners' chances

Wellington Phoenix and Central Coast Mariners go head-to-head in a top-of-the-ladder clash at Sky Stadium on Tuesday night.

The race to win the minor premiership is hotting up, with Phoenix two points clear of the Mariners and Melbourne Victory at the top of the ladder.

Phoenix can be backed at 6.00 to win the minor premiership, while the Mariners are available at 5.00.

Victory, despite all their draws, are still the hot fancies at 3.00 to finish top of the pile come the end of the regular season.

Tuesday night’s clash could have a huge say in the final outcome, with Phoenix looking to open up a five-point gap.

Nix looking to bounce back

Wellington Phoenix are unbeaten in the last five games, but they have drawn three of them, including a 1-1 draw at Brisbane Roar last time out.

They looked to have the three points in the bag on Friday night before Roar scored in stoppage time at the end of the game to deny them.

The Nix will be looking to bounce back and will be delighted to be on home soil once again.

They also drew their last home game 1-1, but that was against the Victory, and has to be viewed as one point gained considering they equalised in the 95th minute.

These two sides also drew 1-1 the last time they met last season, but a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then.

Three points will be the order of the day against the Mariners, but Phoenix have only beaten them once in the last five games.

That was a 2-1 victory at Sky Stadium in January 2023 and the same scoreline on Tuesday can be backed at 11.00.

Oskar Zawada continues to be the biggest goal threat for the Phoenix and he can be backed at 2.62 to score at anytime in the game.

Mariners will take some stopping

Central Coast Mariners are flying and picked up another impressive 4-0 win away at Adelaide United on Saturday night.

They now travel to Wellington full of confidence and will be targeting their fourth win on the bounce.

Key to their success at the moment is the form of striker Angel Torres, who continues to score goals for fun.

He bagged another brace in the win over Adelaide and can be backed at 7.00 to score the first goal of this game.

Torres is already attracting plenty of interest from overseas and the Mariners will need to keep hold of their 10-goal leading scorer if they are to defend their title.

Scoring goals is clearly not an issue, the Mariners have 31 this season, more than any other team in the A-League.

Tuesday’s game is likely to be high-scoring and over 2.5 goals can be backed at 1.61.
