The Tour Down Under is traditionally the opening event of the UCI World Tour and takes place in Adelaide, South Australia, in January.

What is the Tour Down Under?

The Tour Down Under is a professional cycling stage race for both the UCI World Tour and the UCI Women’s World Tour.

Both the world’s elite men and women will race in the Tour Down Under in 2024. The men will battle it out over six stages, the women over three.

The Tour Down Under has always taken place in Adelaide, South Australia.

When is the Tour Down Under?

In 2024, the Tour Down Under will be a 10-day event. It will begin on 12th January and run until 21st January.

Can I watch the Tour Down Under?

Yes. The Tour Down Under will be shown free-to-air on the Seven network, via 7Plus.

What is the route for the Tour Down Under?

The men will battle it out over six stages in and the route will include the beautiful, but testing Adelaide hills.

The iconic climbs on Willunga Hill and Mount Lofty on stage five and six respectively, will be particularly challenging.

The women will race over three stages, and will also ride from Adelaide to the testing Willunga Hill on the final stage.

When was the first Tour Down Under?

For the men, the first Tour Down Under was raced back in 1999 and was won by Australian legend Stuart O’Grady.

The race has grown in stature year by year and now sees all the best teams and riders head over to South Australia at the start of the year.

The Tour Down Under did not take place in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, but returned with a bang in 2023.

The women first raced in 2016 and again the event has risen in stature. So much so in 2023 the race was elevated to the UCI Women’s World Tour.

Who has won the Tour Down Under?

Australian Simon Gerrans has enjoyed great success at the Tour Down Under, winning the race on four occasions.

The Australians have dominated with both Richie Port and Stuart O’Grady winning the Tour Down Under on two occasions.

Riders from other nations have also been successful. South Africa’s Darryl Impey won it back-to-back in 2018 and 2019.

Germany’s Andre Greipel also won it on two occasions, in 2008 and 2010.

In 2023, another Australian, Jay Vine, now riding for the mighty UAE Team Emirates, took out the top prize.
