Australian Racing: Trip going for Gold in Melbourne Cup

There's plenty of action for punters to get stuck into on Melbourne Cup day and we will be focusing on the big meeting at Flemington, as well as the one at Randwick.

Trip to repeat in Cup

The 2023 running of the Melbourne Cup is set to take place over 3200m at Flemington, with the Race That Stops A Nation looking a competitive affair featuring plenty of international interest.

That international interest comes in the form of Breakup for Japan and Irish pair Vauban and Absurde.

Breakup failed to shine when finishing in mid-division in the 2400m Group 1 Caulfield Cup, but the six-year-old is expected to have improved for that effort with Kohei Matsuyama up here.

Vauban and Absurde both represent the Willie Mullins stable, with the former prominent in the market for this for a number of months, having won impressively over 2800m at Royal Ascot in June.

The latter registered a half-length success in the Ebor Handicap at York, with the booking of Zac Purton taking the eye with the gelding set to jump from barrier eight.

However, preference is for another horse with form in Europe in GOLD TRIP, who delivered a two-length success in this race 12 months ago.

The 7.50 pick has had a similar prep this time around, contesting a trio of Group 1s this spring in the Turnbull Stakes, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate.

The seven-year-old was the winner of the Turnbull (compared to ninth last year), third in the Caulfield Cup (second last year) and fifth in the Cox Plate (ninth last year).

With the above in mind, the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained horse arrives here in good form and, while a hostage to fortune given his hold-up racing style, he looks up to going back-to-back here.

Madame goes for Group 3 glory

The Group 3 Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes comes up as the ninth race of the day at Flemington and is set to take place over 1400m.

La Danseuse Rouge is expected to prove popular with punters from an inside barrier.

The filly caught the eye when coming from off the pace to deliver a third-place finish in the Thoroughbred Club Stakes over 1200m when racing at this level at Caulfield last month.

That form has been boosted by the winner She Dances winning subsequently, however Damian Lane’s mount may well find MADAME POMMERY too strong here.

Trained by Chris Waller, the four-year-old jumped at big odds when tackling male rivals in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap over 1600m at Randwick in September.

The daughter of No Nay Never appeared to appreciate the return to racing against her own sex when fourth in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes over this trip at Caulfield last month.

The 5.50 selection met trouble in running on that occasion and dropping back to Group 3 level she looks up to delivering a victory when down in grade.

Cepheus to Dance to success

The most valuable race on the Randwick card is the $3,000,000 Big Dance over 1600m.

A soft 6 track is expected for the race, with Bjorn Baker’s Iknowastar expected to prove popular, having won each of his last four starts.

The gelding registered a victory in the Black Nugget Cup over 1400m at Mudgee at the start of September to commence his winning run.

The four-year-old has won at metro level in his two most recent starts, with both of those triumphs coming from the front at Randwick Kensington.

However, CEPHEUS is the pick in this contest, having won in Group 2 company when delivering a one-and-a-half-length victory in the Shannon Stakes over this trip at Rosehill on September 23rd.

The seven-year-old was also the winner of the 1610m Grafton Cup at Grafton back in July and has demonstrated strong form since.

The 5.50 gelding won the 1400m Alan Brown Stakes by a narrow margin at Rosehill when last in action a month ago and sets the standard on form here.

While the pick would ideally prefer quicker going, he has an inside barrier and is taken to complete a hat-trick under Nash Rawiller.
