Turnbull Stakes history

The Turnbull Stakes was first raced in 1865 but was then known as the Royal Park Stakes, and was won by a horse named The Sign.

It has undergone several name changes throughout the years but has been named the Turnbull Stakes from 1948 onwards.

From 1865 to 1978 it was a Principal Race, before being upgraded to Group 2 status from 1979 to 2005.

The Turnbull Stakes became a Group 1 race in 2006 and has remained that way ever since.

It was originally raced under handicap conditions, then weight-for-age, before switching to set weight with penalties from 1971.

Turnbull Stakes past winners

Gold Trip was the winner of the 2023 edition for trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, and jockey Mark Zahra.

There have been some famous winners of the Turnbull Stakes, including the mighty Winx, who won the race in 2017 and 2018.

Other notable winners include Makybe Diva in 2005 and Northerly in 2002.
