What is the Victoria Derby?

The Victoria Derby is a thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old runners held under Set Weights conditions.

The race, over a distance of 2,500 metres, takes place at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne.

Originally run at a distance of 1.5 miles, the format was changed to 2,400 metres in 1972 to conform to the metric system and was changed a year later to its current distance of 2,500 metres.

When is the Victoria Derby?

The Victoria Derby takes place on the first day of the Mebourne Cup Carnival, which in 2023 means the race will take place on 4th November.

How old is the Victoria Derby?

The Victoria Derby dates back to 1855 with Rose Of May winning the very first race.

Back in 2008, Clare Lindop managed to become the first female jockey to win the Victoria Derby after being the first female to ride in the race three years previous.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse was the first women to train a winner, with Nothin’ Leica Dane securing the landmark win in the 1995 Victoria Derby.

Who has won the Victoria Derby?

Manzoice won the 2022 Victoria Derby with 71,327 in attendance for the race at Flemington Racecourse.

The 2021 race was won by Hitotsu, while the race 12 months previous was claimed by Johnny Get Angry.

What is the prize money for the Victoria Derby?

The Victoria Derby carries the same $2million prize money as the famous Australian Derby, which makes both races the richest Derbys in the country.

First place will claim a staggering $1.2m, with second securing $360,000 and third $180,000.

A $1million bonus this year will be paid to the winner of the $2million Group 1 Penfolds Victoria Derby if they have won one of the Neds Classic, Listed Roderick Insurance Brokers Geelong Classic or Drummond Golf Vase in 2022.
