Australian Racing: Warrandyte Road on the path to Strathalbyn success

There are six meetings set to take place on Sunday including two from New South Wales where both Coonamble and Hawkesbury are set to race.

Race 8 Coonamble

Mayrose @ 7.00

Race 7 Hawkesbury

My Eloise @ 4.40

Race 7 Strathalbyn

Warrandyte Road @ 4.40

Rose for Cup success

It’s Cup day at Coonamble with a field of 14 declared for the 1600m Coonamble Cup.

A soft 6 track is expected, with Strombus likely to jump as favourite for the feature following a number of metro runs over shorter this spell.

The five-year-old has won three times so far in 2023, with two of those victories coming on soft going, including when successful by two lengths on his penultimate start.

Racing over 1400m on a soft 5 track at Randwick Kensington that day, the gelding delivered his third Benchmark 72 win of the year and rates highly switched to a country meeting.

MAYROSE has taken a couple of starts to come to hand in her last two spells and she is preferred on this occasion.

The mare raced from off the pace prior to finishing sixth over 1200m in a Benchmark 72 handicap on a good 4 track at Rosehill when racing first up last month.

Trained by John Sargent, the mare followed that up with a near two-and-a-half-length sixth in a Benchmark 78 handicap in similar conditions at Randwick on 16th September.

The drop in grade is a positive ahead of this contest, while Ben Looker’s mount is a tactically versatile sort, which will help given she is set to jump from barrier 10.

The switch to a wet track is no issue with the mare having won on heavy going in the past and she is taken to deliver her fifth career win.

Eloise to upset Queen

The Michael Freedman-trained Queen Of The Mile is sure to have her supporters ahead of the finale at Hawkesbury.

The race in question is an 1100m Benchmark 64 handicap set to take place on a good 4 surface.

The three-year-old has made just the four starts to date, breaking her maiden in a handicap over this trip on a good 4 track at Bathurst in April.

The youngster resumed with a two-and-a-half-length victory, when racing at this Benchmark 64 level over 1000m at Wyong in August.

Freshened following that effort she rates a worthy favourite.

However at bigger odds, course and distance winner MY ELOISE is preferred from barrier four.

The mare broke her maiden in similar conditions to those expected on Sunday when successful over track and trip last November.

A two length second at Gosford when upped to 1200m followed and, while she has made just the two subsequent starts, she should strip fitter for last month's seasonal debut.

The pick performed with credit when sixth over 900m in a Benchmark 64 handicap that day, with trainer Nathan Doyle boasting an impressive 24% strike-rate (10/42) here last season.

Road for Strathalbyn victory

WARRANDYTE ROAD is a regular at Strathalbyn and he takes the eye in the penultimate race on their card in a 2050m Benchmark 58 handicap.

The selection finished down the field in a similar race to this on his penultimate start but offered more when runner-up in a 1700m Class 2 at Gawler subsequently.

That Gawler effort came on a good 3 track with the pick finishing strongly from off the pace, with hold up tactics having been employed on each of his last three starts.

The step back up in distance looks likely to suit in this contest and Anna Jordsjo looks up to partnering the five-year-old to victory.
