Premier League: Ollie Watkins a threat to Spurs' Champions League hopes

Tottenham face a showdown at Aston Villa as the battle to make the top four in the English Premier League hots up.

Ange Postecoglou’s men travel to fourth-placed Villa on Sunday in need of all three points as they look to close the gap.

Tottenham are in fifth spot, five points adrift of Villa, but they do have a game in hand.

However, it is points in the bag that count and although a draw would not be a disaster, Tottenham will be targeting all three when they head to Villa Park.

As things stand, Villa are priced at 1.80 to make the top four and play Champions League football next season, while Spurs can be backed at 1.90.

Sunday’s encounter has all the makings for a classic and a high-scoring affair could be on the cards.

Current form

Tottenham head into the clash against Villa on the back of three wins in the last five games.

However, as the race to make the top four hots up, any dropped points could prove to be crucial, and Tottenham cannot afford many more slip ups.

A home defeat to Wolves hit them hard, while they also conceded late to draw 2-2 away at Everton.

They bounced back well with a 3-1 over Crystal Palace, but now they need to keep picking up maximum hauls.

Villa have won three games on the bounce and four of the last five.

The last three wins have come against Fulham, Nottingham Forest and Luton, teams they are expected to beat, and Spurs will provide a much sterner test.

The one defeat in the last five came against Manchester United at Villa Park, when they went down 2-1.

Neither team struggles to score goals. Villa have netted 59 so far this season, Spurs 55, and it could be a high-scoring game on Sunday.

Over 2.5 goals in the game can be backed at 1.33, while both teams to score is also available at 1.33.

Watkins the Villa dangerman

The two sides have already met this season and it was Aston Villa that came out on top, winning 2-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in November.

Ollie Watkins grabbed the winner for Villa that day and is priced at 2.20 to score at anytime, or 5.50 to bag the first goal.

Son Heung-min remains Tottenham’s biggest threat and will be looking to add to the 13 goals he has already scored this season - he can be backed at 2.50 to score at anytime.

Team news

Tottenham are boosted by the return of Pedro Porro, who has missed the last two games due to a knee injury and the defender is set to come back into the side at the expense of Emerson Royal.

Brennan Johnson has also been impressing when coming off the bench and could be in line for a start at Villa, while Spurs are still without the injured Richarlison.

Tottenham (probable): Vicario; Porro, Romero, van de Ven, Udogie; Bissouma, Sarr, Maddison; Johnson, Werner, Son.
