A-League: Western United Focus

Western United will be out to bounce back from a disappointing 2022/23 A-League campaign that saw them defend their title with a whimper.

Western won the Championship in the 2021/22 season, but suffered a dramatic fall from grace the year after and coach John Aloisi will want a response.

Repeating their Championship success will be a tall order, but getting back in the top six is realistic, and they are priced at 1.90 to get there.

Aloisi has brought in a host of new faces and it will be interesting to see how his side go in the season ahead.

A-League history

Western United are new to the A-League and only made their debut in the 2019/20 season, so it is an amazing achievement to have already won a Championship.

They were very strong in the 2021/22 campaign and although they slipped to third on the ladder, they bounced back to win the grand final.

However they disappointed last season when getting off to a very poor start. They did recover as the campaign went on, but it came too late and they finished seventh, just missing out on finals.

Western can be backed at 11.00 to pull off another huge upset by winning the grand final in 2023/24.

Western transfer news

Western United have been very busy when bringing in a host of the new faces during the off-season.

Coach John Aloisi has signed a mix of players that are tried and trusted in the A-League, along with one or two players from overseas.

Angus Thurgate, Tom Heward-Belle and Matt Sutton have arrived from Newcastle Jets, Sydney FC and Melbourne City respectively, and will add strength and quality to the Western ranks.

James Donachie is also on board from Sydney FC, while Aloisi has also used the loan market when when signing Kane Vidmar and Daniel Penha from Atletico Mineiro.

Riku Danzaki is another player familiar with the A-League after playing for Brisbane Roar before being snapped up by Scottish outfit Motherwell.

However Western have got the Japanese winger back on board after he penned a two year deal with the club.

Arguably the signing of the summer for Western, is the capture of former Socceroos star Nikita Rukavytsya, who has penned a one-year deal.

The 36-year-old has vast experience having spent the last eight years playing in Israel. In his last two seasons with Maccabi Haifa, he has scored a total of 41 goals.

He can be backed at 67.00 to be the A-League’s Top Goalscorer in the season.

Western opening fixtures

Western get the season underway with a massive Melbourne derby clash against Melbourne City at AAMI Park on Saturday.

They can be backed at 5.00 to pull off a big upset, while City are 1.60 to win. The draw is available at 4.20.

Western then travel to Western Sydney Wanderers the week after and then Macarthur FC on 4th November.

To wrap up November they have two home games against Newcastle Jets and Adelaide United.
