NRL: Which teams look like premiership contenders?

The 2023 NRL premiership race looks to be wide open and there are a handful of teams who have a genuine chance of going all the way.

The NRL ladder is the tightest it has been in years as just four points separate the top eight teams, which makes for a very exciting competition.

There have already been some shock results and the top teams have all looked vulnerable at times, struggling to string together consistent results.

Sydney Roosters, who were one of the hot fancies heading into the new season, have lost six games already, while NRL new boys the Dolphins are flying.

It is a long season and it is all about peaking at just the right time. The cream often rises to the top and there is a very good chance that will happen again in 2023.

But at the midway point in the season, who look to be genuine title contenders?

Brisbane Broncos

Brisbane Broncos have been a revelation this season and are priced at 8.00 to go on and win the grand final.

Kevin Walters' side are top of the pile with nine wins from their opening 13 games and are looking good to challenge this season.

The addition of gun fullback Reece Walsh has been a huge plus point for them and they do have a roster packed with quality.

The key will be keeping everyone, including Adam Reynolds, fit.

They slipped to back-to-back defeats against the Storm and Panthers without him, but bounced back to beat the Warriors on Saturday when he returned.

Penrith Panthers

The reigning premiers have not been at their best so far this season in suffering four defeats from their opening games.

However, Penrith still sit joint-second on the ladder and that is a scary thought for the rest of the competition.

The Panthers lost to South Sydney and Wests Tigers, but have since bounced back to win three on the spin. They may have lost some key players but still have Nathan Cleary and co.

Penrith have won the last two grand finals and know how to get the job done. They are sure to improve as the season goes on and are the hot fancies at 3.60 to go on and win the grand final once again.

South Sydney Rabbitohs

South Sydney Rabbitohs had looked like the team to beat this season after winning six games on the bounce, but have since lost the last two.

They sit fourth on the ladder with eight wins and five defeats and will have to find more consistency if they are to win the grand final.

But they have shown what they are capable of when beating the Panthers and Broncos this season, and with the likes of Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker in their side anything is possible.

Souths will be in the mix to win the grand final come the end of the year and can be backed at 4.75.

Melbourne Storm

Melbourne Storm lost a host of experienced players during the off-season and many wrote off their chances of winning the grand final.

They have slipped to four defeats, but are just two points off top spot having beaten the Broncos and Dolphins in their last two games.

With coach Craig Bellamy at the helm and with a roster that includes Cameron Munster, Jahrome Hughes and Harry Grant, they can go a long way this season.

The Storm are another side who know how to win a grand final and they are priced at 7.00.
