Cricket: Who is starring in the Sheffield Shield?

The 2023/24 Sheffield Shield season is underway and a number of players are firing a timely reminder to the Australian selectors.

The Australians are currently in India attempting to win the Cricket World Cup, but they will soon be back on home soil, ready to tackle a busy summer.

Australia will first take on Pakistan in three Test matches, including the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, before the West Indies arrive for two Test matches.

The Australian Test side will have a familiar look to it, but there are a number of players who will be looking to force their way.

They are currently using the Sheffield Shield to fire timely reminders to the Aussie selectors, who could be left with a few headaches.

Let’s take a look at the players shining in the Sheffield Shield.

Marcus Harris

The left-handed opening batsman is push for a Test recall following an impressive knock for Victoria in their match with Tasmania.

Harris has not played for Australia since 2022 but has often been mentioned when David Warner has struggled for Test runs in the past.

Harris again showed what he is capable of with a classy innings of 164 as Victoria made 373 against Tasmania.

It was the batsman’s 27th first-class century and could not have come at a better time as he looks to return to the Australian Test side.

Warner will of course be retiring from Test cricket in January and now is the time for Harris to stake his claim for his spot in the side.

However, one swallow does not make a summer, and Harris will need to keep on impressing if he to convince the selectors he is worth another chance.

Henry Hunt

The South Australian opening batsman also showed he is up for the fight with an impressive century in the match against Queensland.

Hunt is another player that is keen to stake a claim for Warner’s spot when he steps aside, and he did his chances no harm with a tidy knock in his latest innings.

It was his first first-class century in over a year, and after smashing 13 boundaries in his innings, he will be hoping to kick on.

Hunt currently sit behind Harris, Cameron Bancroft and Matt Renshaw in the Australian pecking order.

However if he can string together a few more big innings in the Sheffield Shield, he could move himself up it and closer to Test selection.

Corey Rocchiccioli

Western Australia off-spinner Corey Rocchiccioli is starting to make a name for himself and could soon be knocking on the door.

Todd Murphy is currently the hot fancy to take over from Nathan Lyon, when he eventually retires from Test cricket, but Rocchiccioli is chasing hard.

The 26-year-old took 25 wickets in 10 matches last year, and has started this campaign in impressive fashion.

Under the watchful eye of the Australian selectors he out-bowled Murphy in WA’s recent win over Victoria, recording figures of 6-53 off 42.2 overs.

Rocchiccioli will continue to learn his trade in the Sheffield Shield but looks to be in with a shout of a Test call-up sooner rather than later.
