Australian Racing: Wish ready to Win Memsie Stakes

There's plenty of Group action at Randwick and Caulfield this weekend, with the latter staging the 1400m Group 1 Memsie Stakes on their ten-race card.

Win wishing for Memsie success

The previously mentioned Group 1 Memsie Stakes comes up as the penultimate race on the Caulfield card with Mr Brightside expected to prove popular with punters.

The gelding has won his final two starts of his last spell including in the $5,000,000 All-Star Mile over 1600m at Moonee Valley in March.

While that success came on a good 4 track, the gelding handles softer conditions as he showed when winning the Group 1 Doncaster Mile on a heavy 9 surface two weeks later.

Spelled following that effort he resumed with a victory in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes over this track and trip last month.

A high draw may prove an issue for the six-year-old here, however, and I WISH I WIN is preferred on this occasion.

The confirmed hold-up performer showed good form around this time late last year including when taking out the $10,000,000 Golden Eagle over 1500m at Rosehill.

Trained by Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman the 4.60 gelding proved that he is up to competing at the highest level when delivering two placed efforts in sprints earlier this year.

The second of those saw him finishing third in the 1200m Newmarket Handicap at Flemington, while he followed that up with a success in the Group 1 T J Smith Stakes at Randwick in April.

While it came at a much lower grade than he tackles here, the son of Savabeel has won first up in the past and is taken to deliver a victory under Luke Nolen.

Montefilia to take Chelmsford spoils

MONTEFILIA showed good form at the highest level over further in her last spell and she is taken to deliver a victory in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes over 1600m at Randwick.

The race is set to take place on a soft 6 surface as the eighth race on a ten-race card with the pick jumping from barrier three.

Trained by Chris Waller the mare was held up for a late run when finishing in mid-division, beaten less than two-and-a-half-lengths in the Group 1 Winx Stakes over 1400m here two weeks ago.

The 4.20 six-year-old encountered similar underfoot conditions to those expected here and is likely to have improved for that effort having raced first up in that event.

The booking of James McDonald is a positive here and, stepping up in distance, he looks capable of steering the Kermadec mare to a seventh career success.

Secret ready to upset Nature

The $1,000,000 Group 3 Concorde Stakes over 1000m is the most valuable race on the Randwick card and sees the seasonal debut of top sprinter Nature Strip.

It’s nearly a year since the gelding last registered a victory, with that success coming when racing first up in the Group 2 Bowermans Shorts over 1100m on a soft 7 surface here.

However, of the veteran’s four subsequent starts three came at Group 1 level, with the other coming in The Everest.

Absent since a fourth in the Group 1 T J Smith Stakes over 1200m on a heavy 9 track in April, he has trialled well for his return and rates highly here.

The four-year-old filly IN SECRET showed good form last season including when taking out the 1200m Group 1 Newmarket Handicap on a good 3 track at Flemington on her penultimate start.

Trained by James Cummings, she could finish only seventh in the previously mentioned Group 1 T J Smith Stakes at Randwick subsequently.

In Secret, 3.60, has a good alley five from the rail here and was a first up winner over 1200m here in a Group 2 event in her last spell, so she is selected to salute dropping in distance.
