Women’s World Cup: Matildas and Lionesses set for blockbuster

Australia and England are set to go head-to-head in the semi-final of Women’s World Cup, while Spain will also take on Sweden.

Following four nail-biting quarter-finals, we are down to the final four teams and it does not get much bigger than Australia versus England.

The Matildas on home soil have the whole of Australia behind them, but they are up against the Lionesses, who are priced at 3.00 to win the World Cup, in the semi-finals.

It is a clash that will stop both nations on Wednesday evening (AEST) and England will be out to upset the party.

Spain are the hot fancies at 2.50 to win the World Cup but first of all they will have to overcome Sweden on Tuesday evening.

The Matildas booked their passage through to the semi-finals with an epic penalty shoot-out win over France and it remains to be seen how much that game will have taken out of them.

Both Australia and France looked tired in extra-time before the Matildas triumphed 7-6 in a dramatic shoot-out.

They do have plenty of time to recover ahead of Wednesday’s clash, while England had it slightly easier when coming from behind in a bruising encounter to beat Colombia 2-1 in 90 minutes.

The two sides have met each other on three occasions with England winning three, Australia two, while the other finished in a draw.

Australia did win the most recent meeting 2-0 in a match played in Brentford, England.

The big question surrounding the Matildas side involves Sam Kerr. The Chelsea striker again started on the bench against France, but now could be the time to put her in from the start.

Kerr is priced at 3.40 to grab a goal at Anytime in the game, but the Matildas do have goal threats all over the pitch with the likes of Mary Fowler and Caitlin Foord a threat.

England will be looking towards the likes of Alessia Russo once against after she scored the winner against Colombia.

The Arsenal striker is priced at 8.00 to score the first goal of the game.

The Matildas have performed well in Sydney so far this tournament when beating Ireland 1-0 and Denmark 2-0 in the round of 16.

England have won both games in Sydney, including the victory against Colombia that was also played at Accor Stadium.

We could be in for a tight, tense, low-scoring game and under 2.5 goals in the clash can be backed at 1.53.

Sweden out to cause upset

Spain were involved in another thriller when defeating the Netherlands 2-1 in extra-time.

Salma Paralluelo was the hero with the winning goal in extra-time, and can be backed at 3.75 to score at Anytime against Sweden.

Sweden showed what they are made of with a surprise 2-1 win over Japan and a clash against Spain will hold no fear for them.

Amanda Ilestedt was on the scoresheet against Japan and amazingly the defender could be in line to scoop the golden boot.

The Arsenal defender now has four goals for the tournament, including three headers in the group stage, and she is priced at 12.00 to score at Anytime.
