Sam looks set for Mystic success

The sole Group race of the day comes up as the penultimate race on an eight-race card at Hobart.

The 1200m contest, restricted to fillies & mares, is expected to take place on a soft 5 track with Give Giggles expected to her supporters for the Tony & Calvin McEvoy team.

The four-year-old has shown good form in her six-race career to day winning four times so far, with all four of those victories coming at Ballarat.

The filly came home three-and-a-half-lengths clear of her 11 rivals when contesting an 1100m Benchmark 70 handicap on a soft 5 track at the Victoria venue.

Prior to that the filly had attempted to make all the running prior to fading when racing down the straight at Flemington in an 1100m Benchmark 80 handicap.

The daughter of War Decree arrives here on the back of a win in a 1000m barrier trial at Geelong, however YELLOW SAM is preferred on this occasion.

Trained by Lindsey Smith, the filly completed a hat-trick when delivering a two-length success in a 1204m Benchmark 64 handicap at Donald in July last year.

The 3.20 pick showed good form when placing three times at Caulfield subsequently, prior to resuming this spell with a close up third in a Benchmark 78 handicap over 1200ma at Moonee Valley.

Fred Kersley’s mount built on that promising effort when winning by one-and-a-half-lengths in a Benchmark 70 handicap at Geelong last month and she looks up to recording her first Group race win.

Wolflands goes for Valley double

The fourth race on the Moonee Valley card takes the eye, with the race in question a 955m Benchmark 78 handicap set to take place on a good 4 track.

Thomas Carberry’s Scuderia arrives here in good form, having won over this course and distance on each of her last three starts.

Those three starts have seen her make all on each occasion, including when winning by over two lengths in a Benchmark 70 handicap on a good 4 track in December.

The filly has been freshened since that effort, but she steps up in grade here and her winning run looks likely to come to an end.

Top weight WOLFLANDS is the pick in this event, having shown good winning form over this track and trip when taking out a Benchmark 84 handicap in September 2022.

The five-year-old resumed this spell with a good second in a 1000m Benchmark 78 handicap on a good 3 track here in December.

The 4.60 gelding followed that effort up by going one better when victorious by over a length in a 1000m Benchmark 86 handicap at Murray Bridge last month.

The form of that Murray Bridge triumph is working out well, with the runner-up and seventh both registering subsequent victories and he is taken to follow up dropping back in distance.

Verse to return to winning ways

The sixth at Canterbury is a 1250m Benchmark 78 handicap contest, with WINNING VERSE taking the eye.

The 3.40 selection has registered two solid efforts over 1200m this spell, including when beaten just over two-and-a-half-lengths when fourth of seven at Randwick on 27th January.

The five-year-old tracked the speed when contesting a Benchmark 78 handicap held on a soft 5 track on that occasion.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy rides for the first time this spell and he is looking for his second success on the mare, having partnered her to victory at Rosehill in June last year.

Trainer Marc Conners’ representative has a good barrier in six and looks up to registering her fourth career win.
