Australian Racing: Yulong Sovereign eyeing Mackay crown

There are five meetings set to take place on Friday with Mackay in Queensland the sole provincial fixture.

Race 5 Mackay

Yulong Sovereign @ 3.60

Race 8 Geelong

Red Columbine @ 2.80

Race 8 Moruya

Spriteley Emily @ 4.80

Sovereign To Score

The fifth race at Mackay takes the eye with a field of 13 declared for the 1100m Benchmark 70 handicap.

A soft 5 surface is expected with Wanna Tweet expected to have her supporters racing first up.

Trained by Graham R Hughes, the mare has won first up in the past and while she failed to score in nine starts in her last spell she did manage five placed efforts.

Eight of those nine starts came at Townsville, including when down the field in finishing eighth over 1000m in a Benchmark 70 event at the end of January.

The five-year-old is without a barrier trial and Lacey Morrison’s mount looks opposable.

YULONG SOVEREIGN is set to carry top weight here with the Ricky Vale-trained gelding having shown good form on a soft track when third over 1050m in a Benchmark 70 event at Rockhampton in May.

The five-year-old proved a disappointment when sixth over this 1100m distance at the same venue subsequently, however he was ridden with more restraint that day.

Ryan Wiggins has won on the pick in the past and he looks capable of steering the son of Zoustar to his fourth win in seven starts at this track.

Columbine for Geelong win

Dropping in grade, RED COLUMBINE looks up to delivering a victory in the penultimate race on Geelong’s nine race card.

The filly has won twice this spell including when victorious by a head in a Benchmark 70 event over 2000m at Mornington at the end of May.

That triumph came on a soft 5 track with the filly having previously delivered a victory when racing at this Benchmark 58 level over this 2200m distance at Ararat in April.

Successful by six lengths on a soft 5 surface on that occasion the pick has a good alley six off the rail here.

Jockey Beau Mertens takes the ride for the first time and looks capable of steering the daughter of Redwood to a fourth victory in 13 career starts.

Emily to triumph at Moruya

The final race on the card at Moruya is an interesting affair with Sooboogeliscious chasing a double having delivered a victory when contesting a 1425m Benchmark 58 handicap here at the end of June.

The three-year-old had previously finished runner-up when beaten two-and-a-half-lengths in a handicap contest at this level at Sapphire Coast just over a month ago.

The pick may have trouble confirming last start form with SPRITELY EMILY here who had to overcome a wide post position prior to finishing a length second in that Moruya event.

Prior to that the pick had delivered a head success when contesting a Benchmark 58 event on a soft 5.

The barrier draw has been slightly kinder to Terry Robinson’s inmate here, and while she often tracks the pace, she has been ridden from mid-division in the past.

Connections have opted to stick with promising apprentice Emma Ly, on board when the mare placed second last time out and the pair look capable of successfully teaming up for a victory.
